Owing to harvest claiming thA attention 1 of the farmers, the attendance at the Rangiora market yesterday wa« somewhat smaller than at last week's sales- There was a yarding of 1552 fat lambs, 257 fat ewee, and 286 wethers. Tbe freezing buyers operated freely, nevertheless prices were eomewhat easier than last, week' 3 quotations, attd in consequence vendors, in a few instances, refused the offers made, and many others sold, witj I a reluctant spirit. ASHBURTON STOCK MARKET. There was an entry of 1512 iat eheep jit the Ashburton yards yesterday, includm(j333 ewca, 395 wethers, and 781 la-mfcs There was a good attendance, and bidding -was keen. Freezing buyers operated frasly, and good prices were paid for local butchers lots. Prime ewes made 39s (id to 31a 4a, lighter 26a 3d to 29s 4d. prime wethers 29s 10d to 33s Id, lighter 27s 7d to 29a, lambs 26s to 31s 3d. The principal sales were: — Ewes—2l at 27s lOd, 23 at 26# 6d, o9 at 23s 3d, 56 at 27a, 13 at 31s 4d, 16 at 29a 6d. Wethers—22 at 32s 3d, 20 at 27s 7d. o4 at 31s Id, 20 at 29s lOd, 14 at 295, 7 at 32i 6d, 35 at 33a Id, 125 at 32s Id, 37 at 325. Lambs—B6 at 26s Bd, 111 at 26s 4d, ;0 at 27s 7d, 112 at 3te, 128 at 275, 85 at -265. The yarding of store sheep totallecr 213-4. There was a poor demand, and of the yarding 1950 were passed at auction. There was only a small entry of cattle, and nothing of prime quality was yarded. Fat heifers brought £8 10s to £10 ss, fat cows £10 17s 6d -to £11 15e, cow® in pront £5 to £7, yearling steers £2 12s 6d to £3, and yearling heifers £2 9s to -£3 15s. SALE OF STUD SHEEP. (PRESS ASSOOIAMON TXLXGBAH.) PALMERSTON NORTH, January 21. At the sale of E. Short's stud and flock Romneys to-day, 700 sheep were sold at satisfactory prices. Stud rams varied from 18 to 18gs, and better sorts from 40 to 60go. The highest prioo, 124ga, was paid by £. Tanner (Gisborne).' Other high prioCs were -\V. Johnston (Papatoe) 102gs, H. A. Waldegrave (Palmereton) lOlga, P. Keilson Tuikatahuna) lOOgs, Hunt Bros. (Nelson) DOgs, o. Stair (Hawera) 81gs. Flock Tama ranged from 3 to 7gs, and better sorts from 10 to lijgs. Ewes made 5 to 7gs. CHBISTCHURCH W.il.C. BUILDINGSOCIETY No. 2. ANNUAL MEETING. The annual general meeting of the Christchurch Working Men's Co-operativo Building' Society No. 2 was held last night, Mr G. Lomas presiding. The annual report of group No. 1 stated that the Society was just on the point of finally winding up—war conditions would cause some short delay—-but the directors hoped to realise on a property which, had tied up some of the money. When this was done the surplus could be divided and paid out to shareholders. The balance to profit and loss was £1983 18s 4d, with interest still to come of £34. The annual report of gToup J>o. 3 stated that the group continued to advance in spite of adverse conditions, and providing the present shareholders remained, much good would bo accomplished ere the group had run its course. Three appropriations were held during the year, one by ballot and two by sale. The profit and loss account had a credit balance of £511 19s 2d. The chairman stated that the directors bad decided to mate a progress payment of £1200 on account of group No. 1 in two or three months' time. Mr H. Chaplin stated that the .No. 1 group had accumulated about £2000 profit, and this was the largest profit any traildins society had been allowed to accumulate and divide amongst its shareholders. The reports and balance-sheets of both groups were adopted. The retiring directors, Messrs G. Lomas, H. Chaplin. W. Bell, and J. H. Jones, were re-elected, as was also the shareholders' auditor, Mr Geo. Miller. The chairman stated that in group No. 3 they proposed to hold a ballot in fiva weeks' time. The secretary (Mr J. H. Jones) Eaid the director® proponed to par out a dividend of £5 per 6haro in group No. 1. He did not know of a society which had oome out with £uch a large credit to its profit and less account which, different from that of most societies, had remained about the earn© for the past four or five years until it threatened to ton £2000. . A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the lecretary. HIGH PKICEiToR PRODUCE. ACUTE SHORTAGE IN SYDNEY. The seriousness of the drought is reflected in the continued abnormally high prices for produce in the wholesale markets of the city, according to the Sydney newspapers of January 4th. All classes of forage "and grain, together with potatoes, were scarce and quoted at substantial advances on the high rates ruling at the opening of the week.
