Th» Tararcera, which arrived in Lytlellon on Sunday morning with cargo and mails from Wellington, will leave this port to-day for Wellington and Auckland, Mr H. R. Frith, third engineer of tho Mararoa, signed off the /esael at Lyttelton yesterday on holiday leave. _ Mr J. Sligo joined the Kaiapoi at Lyttel-
ton yesterday as purser, and Mr E. W. Colebrook; joined the vessel as assistant purser. The'Kaiapoi, at present unloading general cargo from Melbourne at this port, will probably take her departure this evening for "Wellington, whence she will proceed to Greymouth and Melbourne.
Tli© Wootton will probably bo ready for loading at'Lyttelton to-day. The vessel has been undergoing overhaul. She is timed to sail North this' evening. The ship Duquesne ia loading ball act at Lyttelton. The vessel is expected to be' in readiness for despatch from this- port on Thursday or Friday. From Lyttelton jalie will prooeed to Adelaide. The arrival of the liner Suevio at Lyttelton is expected on Monday. ' She is' coming from London via Auckland and Wellington. The vessel arrived at Auckland on Snnday morning. The. steamer John did not sail from Lyttelton yesterday as anticipated. She will leave for Oamaru to-day. The coastal steamer Kortare • should rcach Lyttelton to-morrow with merchandise from southern ports. She will load - at Lyttelton for Dunedin and Invercprgill, and, will sail thither to-morrow evening. Mr Chas. Biadley is relieving Mr W.,F. Mulgan as chief engineer on the Ngakuta. Mr W. Argyleshire —Was to have leit united Kingdom for Australia early in December. LOSS OF PORT HUNTER. WELL-KNOWN C. AND D. LINER. News reached Melbourne a few days _ ago that the Commonwealth and Dominion liner. Port Huntei, had been lost off Nantucket, U.S.A., after being rent by a terrific explosion. The information was contained in a letter, dated November 29th, leceived by a Melbourne shipping man from Mr I. Sawbridge, who was chief officer on the veetfel et tho time. . Mr Sawbridge does not indicate whether tho Port Hunter struck a mine or wa* torpedoed by a German submarine. H« writes: —"The Port Hunter has gone," and add* that an explosion, which shattered the steamer, hurled caae4 of goods, included in her car go. high into the air, whilo she was momentarily engulfed in a epout of water which was flung to a height of 60ft.
