NEW BRIGHTON GALA.

A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION,

After having been postponed for a week, | tho ew Brighton Gala was held on SaturI day in fin© weather. As usual, New Brighton was en fete for the occasion, the various | shops, otc., being gaily decorated with flags and streamers, and the whole town presented a very thorough holiday appearance. I Early in tho morning the various trams ironi "town were well crowded, and the people went down in large numbers during the afternoon, so that when the gala was actually in full progress tho beach bore a very animated appearance. The function proved to be a complete success, thanks to tho hard work of the joint secretaries, Messrs J. Boeomwo-rth and K. Browning, »nd the various committees. An attractive programme of sports and other events \vr.« gone through, while innumorablo side shows did good business. In the afternoon, in addition to tho other attractions, there was a. big novelty dunce and a concert by tho New Brighton Strollers on the pier. JPnrticulur interest was "taken in the Highland dancing and in tho nquatio events-/ which included a grand combined display of life-saving by members of the New Brighton, North Beach, Sumner, ana Taylor's Mistake Su r | Cluba. A "Mysterious Mr X." competition wa3 thoroughly enjoyed by all. and eventually Master Edward Owle3 secured the prize of a. ham and £1 Is by running to earth the "mystery man" in the person of 2dr H. J. Otley. Large crowds 6luyod down for the evening, and evidently all enjoyed themse'ves thoroughly. The proceedings opened with a massed Eire Brigade torchlight prccf-seion from tho tramway bridge. A grand fancy dress carnival in tho Pier Hall waa al6o a great success, and a brilliant illumination of the piat and CGplanad?. wea a, feature o* the evening. The New Brighton Marino Band piayed selections on the rotunda, both afternoon and evening. The proceeds of tho gala will be devoted to the Naval Heroes' Dependants and Returned Soldiers' Memorial Funds.
