WORKERS' PICNIC

On Saturday afternoon the. members nnd families of the Canterbury Industrial Cooperative Society, and tho Workers' Educational Association, to the number of over 200, held 11 most enjoyable and successful picnio in the Gardens around the Tea Kiosk, and the new- lake presented a very animated and happy scene. Tea und cakes were supplied free to all. The members of tho Goop. Ladies' Guild provided a generous supply of cakes, and presided at the tea table to the genernl satisfaction of all. At the close of the afternoon's proceedings, a short meeting was held, presided over oy Mr H. Bruce. Mr Manning, in describing the object of the picnic, said it was to foster the co-operative spirit, ajid to heir in making life worth living. . Mr J. B. Struthers, iqpnager of the Co-op. Society and secretary of the W.E.A., said the Co-op. was the offspring of tho W.E.A. in Christchurch. He could assure those present that the, society was economically sound and progressive. A Ladies' Guild had been formed in connexion with the society, and waa proving a most useful auxiliary. During the recent e'pidemic it had rendered practical service to a number of families, from which the breadwinner had been tcken. They wanted to soe thp Co-op., thoGGuiltd t and the W.li.A. spread. The Ladies' Guild was honrtily thanked for its services, and cheers were given for tho Coop. The winners of the sports were: — Married women's race —Mrs Brown 1, Mrs Oweri 2Married men's race—Hogwood 1, Winskell

"Married versus bingle women—Mrs Harper 1, Miss Smile 2. Tug-of-War, women—lire Ferguson s team. Men's tug-of-war—H. Bruce's team. In the children's races .all who took part received a present. Messrs J. B. Struthers and the secretary, Mr J. J. Burrows, along with Mr Manning arid Mr Bruce, acted as starters and handicappers fox the various events.
