FOOTWEAR PRICES.

ACTION BY LOCAL MANUFACTURERS. Following upon the meeting of Christchurch members of the New Zealand lioot Manufacturers' Association, held last Thursday, at which the steps taken by the Board of Trade _in connexion with the standardisation of certain lines of footwear was discuss-; ed, the following letter has boon forwarded to the Minister in Charge of the Board of Trade (Hon. W. D. S. Mac Donald) by the secretary (Mr Harry R. Best) of the Christchurch Centre of the Association: "A meeting of tho local members of the New Zealand Boot Manufacturers' Association was held in this city on Thursday, at which tho question of standardised boots came up for discussion. Various articles have appeared in the public Press of late referring to this subject, also a notice that samples would* bo open for inspection by the Christchurch manufacturers at a certain date. It has been publicly stated that samples of the proposed standardised boots have_ been on view in Christchurch. This is entirely incorrect. We understand the samples were brought to Christchurch with a view to inspection by the local manufacturers, but owing to the influenza epidemic, they were not oponed. It would appear that the standardised boot scheme (to which the Christchurch manufacturers Bhow no hostility) was a war measure, but are boots to be the only commodity standardised for price and quality? We desire to bring under your notice the fact that the pjrice of 6ole leather in Australia has been fixed at Is B}d lb, whereas we in New Zealand are paying 2s 2d lb. We are of the opinion that the public is looking for not only a standardised boqt, but for a substantial reduction in cost. This is quite impossible unless the price of leather be reduced. We would, therefore, respectfully suggest for your consideration that the price of leather be fixed bv tho Board of Trade before anything is done wtih the manufacture or retailing of tho boots."
