CAVALRY HORSES.

SALE AROUSES CRITICISM.

LONDON, January 2. The decision to sell General Alfenby's horses locally is arousing strong criticism among horse-lovers. Major-General Sir W. Bickbeck, director of remounts, in an explanatory letter, says that the decision applies to the horses and mules of the Mesopotamia and Egyptian forces. Repatriation is impossible, because every ship is required to bring food and raw material. The destruction is unthinkable of thousands of useful young animals required by the local population for agriculture and transport. There is no likelihood of ill-treatment in Syria, Palestine, or Egypt more than elsewhere, therefore the best thing is to sell locally. Each general has been given the fullest discretion in the matter of destroying animals. Experience shows that local people treat animals infinitely better than many Europeans do, and it would be inhuman and wasteful to destroy animals which are sorely needed to replenish depleted local stocks.
