"WORSE THAN SUSPECTED."
(By Cable.—Frees Awsociatioru—Copyright.) (Australian and X.4. Cable Association^ (Received January loth, 11.5 p.m.) LONDON, January 13. The Berlin correspondent of the "Manchester Guardian" states that owing to the energy and initiative of Herr Leopold, a member of the Berlin Soviet Committee early in the revolution, the archives covering the German occupation of Belgium and France were saved. Many waggon loads wero hurried off and were in danger of being spirited awav. many people having an interest in suppressing them, but Herr Leopold inaugurated a systematic search of the archives, in spite of the opposition of Count von Der Lancken, Chief of tho German Political Department at Brussels. Tho documents show that tho atrocities were far worse tTTan tho Entente suspected Particularly revolting details are given of the Nurse Cavell case, in which General Sauberrzwei behaved as a brute and ruffian. The documents show that tho Germans carried off the mattresses of all Belgians under soventy years of age. It is expected the documents will prove that German high officials concerned with American food relief enriched themselves at the expense of the starving Belgians. ' V.C. AIRMAN'S FATE. LONDON. January 6. In relation to the death of Lieutenant Jjeefe Robinson, V.C., of tho Flying Corps, which is attributes to the illtreatment received by him when a prisoner in Germany, his fiancee states that he arrived home tired and broken in health. He had been in solitary confinement for six weeks without light, fuel, or tobacco. Sentries dogged his footsteps jeering and scoffing. He was apparently singled out at Holminden, and subjected to peculiar refinements of torture. Robinson did not refer to the brutality after his return until tho influenza produced delirium shortly before his death, and he fancied that Nienieyer and tho sentries wero standing with fixed bayonets at his bedside. Hei frequently called out for protection. It is stated that Niemeyer, tho notorious commandant of the camp, promised ai* a^ cn S e Schramm, who perished in Ij*®,Zeppelin that was destroyed ati Cuffley, near London. A fellow-officer, who was also at Holzminden. confirms tho statement that Niemeyer did his utmost to annoy Robinson.
