A fair quantity of peaches has commenced to ieach tlio innrkot torn Otago Central, and. the local fruit business is beginning to brighten up as a lesult (says yesterday's "Otago Daily Times.") The .peaches that have arrived are of good quality, and - prospects are satisfactory for a good crop. Within the next fortnight tho pcach season should be in full swing, but it will not be a long one. On tho other hand, tho apricot crop ia not too good, » big l proportion of tho Iruit having been ruined by the frosts. Tho apricot season will also be a short one. Tho main tomato crop is still an uncertain quantity, Prices liave ruled very high for hothouse grown. The outaido grown, tomatoes-. will not bo available for eorno time, owing to the late eoason. Tho strawberry season, which is now drawing to a finish, has not been very eucoesful, so far as tho crop return is conoernod. Prices have itilod very high right through tho season. The high cost will probably prevent housewives making their usual quantity of strawberry jam this year. Supplies of apples continue short. Practically the last of the fruit out of Canterbury cool stores came to the local market last week. None have been, available from Aus- a in consequence of the hold-up of ship-" ping. It is questionable whether supplies of any quantity can bo drawn this j;oar from the Papaniu district, which is an important supplier to the local market, tho frosts having been very severe in that locality. In the Otago Contral, however, crop prospects have considerably improved, and ' a fair return should come from this big fruit growing district.' The Southland district should bo able to provide substantial quantities, and the reports from NeJeon are very favourable. A few odd lines of very early sorts have come forward from the Central, bnt it will be about the end of February before the main crops there are ready to bo gathered. APPLE SHIPMENTS. / Ole secretary of the Nelson Provincial Fruitgrowers' Caninefl. has received information from the Department of Agriculture that the Shipping Committee advises that there is no likelihood of steamers proceeding via the Cape Horn route, which, precludes the consideration of apple shipments to Monte Video or Bio. The alco states that it has been in communication with tho London Tonnage Committee, inquiring whether epaoe could be allotted for apples to the United Kingdom in March, April, or May. The latter Committee replied by cable . that the matter is under consideration., but the provision of space is extremely difficult owing /to the large quantity of meat purchased by the Imperial Government awaiting shipment^ CHRISTCHURCH STOCK EXCHANGE.
