After discharging cargo and re-loading she was despatched yesterday evening for Nelson end New Plymouth. The Calm arrived -at Lyttelton yesterday morning from Wanganui and Wellington. She lauded general cargo here, and loaded for Dunedin, for whence sho departed yesterday. The Mana arrjved in port on Tuesday from l J&nrajning here . until ye®terdny, when she left on & return voyage northwards-. • Her first port of call will be Wellington, I The Breeze did not arrive at Lyttelton yesI terday as anticipated. Tho vessel is now expected here early this morning. She is coming from Dunedin and Thna.ru, and will load here for Pic top and Wartgahui. The Eaiapoi is due to-day at Dunedin from Melbourne, via Bluff. She will discharge general cargo at Dunedin, and from that port will come on to Lyttelton, arriving here probably on Saturday. After discharge at Lyttelton she will proceed to Greymouth, and thence to. Melbourne. The costal stccmer Kotare will probably leave Dunedin on Saturday, laden with general merchandise, for Timaru and Lyttelton. The To Anau is due to-day at Dunedin from the North. Sho sails later for Bluff And Oamaru to load for Auckland. The Union Company's steamer Kamona will go into dock o + Port Chalmers this week to undergo survey and overhaul. Mr Mulholland (New- Ztaland Inspector for the Amalgamated Wireless, Ltd., of Australasia) has received word that Messrs R. H. Alexander and E. S. .Taylor (operators on tho Wairuna end Matunga respectively), who have been interned at Karlsruhe, Germany, have now been repatriated. They are both reported to be in good health, and expect to bs homeward bound shortly. The New Zealand Shipping. Company's liners Rcmuero. and Paparox left Colon on sth and 6th January respectively for Newport News, en. route from "Wellington ta London. Bound for San Francisco, the big French barque Colonel de Yillebois Mnreuil (which has had a lengthy stay at Wellington) left that port on Monday afternoon with a cargo loaded by the Union Company. Captain "William Cozens has charge of the vcsael, -as Captain M. Gourio, the former master, succumbed to an attack of influenza oomo months ago. P. AND O. LINER'S NARROW ESCAPE. Tho P. and 0. liner Sardinia, which arrived at Sydney on 'December 29th with a contingent of troops from tho front, ia one of tbo few merchant vessels to survive • torj }>edoing. "When c,II Gibraltar eariy last year tho Sardinia encountered a submarine, and a torpedo struck her in tho forward part, doing considerable damage. In an almost hclplesu condition she was pursued by the submarine, but Captain Cadiz, who was in charge of tho veesel, under most trying conditions, waa able to manoeuvre the rhip in such a manner as to thwart the further efforts of the Üboat until a British torpedo boat c-tme lo the assistance of tho Sardinia and destroyed tho pirate. "With this very material aid Captain Cadiz was enabled to g<ei his vessel to aa Algerian port. He displayed commendable pluck and skill in the navigation of the steamer, and in recognition of this service was subsequently awarded the Distin- 1 guiahed Service Cro6s.
