■ —_—t _ BILLIARDS... . A "flying 50" billiard handicap competition, played amongst, members of the Lyltelton Club this week, resulted in a wini' after a closo finish, for J. Lufaro, who beat W. Agar in tho final., A MIRACULOUS ESCAPE. A narrow escape from a fatal accident was witnessed at the railway crossing at the foot of Oxford street yesterday morning. Threp men wero walking over the railway lines near tho Railway Casual Workers' Union's Social Hall, and in attempting to cross the lines in front of an approaching train, two of the men succeeded in jumping clear of the engine, but the third, a waterside worker, named Thomas Cornish, was struck on the right leg by the. engine's tender, and thrown ofi his balance. The man possessed sufficient presence of mind, however, to throw himself clear of the engino whilst he was falling. One of his boots appeared to be flattened, and tho 6010 was parted from the upper, this loading to tho assumption that tbo engine's wheels had gone over his foot, but an examination showed that this was not tho case, although two of the man's toos wero severely bruised. The only other injury which a prelim in axy examination disclosed was a slight pbrasion on the right hand. Cornish was taken to tho casualty ward, where he received attention from Dr. Newell. THE PICTURES. At the Harbour Light Picture Theatre yesterday afternoon and evening, Olga Pelrova appeared in a stirring drama from her own studio/ entitled "A Daughter of Destiny." "The Mnsked Ball." a complete storyette from "Tho Scarlet Runner" (serial) wm also screeiTed. The same programme will bo repeated .this evening. To-morrow's programme includes a war diama, "The Spirit of 17," in which. Jack Pickford plays the leading role.
