C.M.G., 1.G.5., Chief of the General Staff. when he returns to England, instead of rejoining Rs regiment, will, at hilrn own request, ljo nla'Tf] on tho Retired List, and engage in farming his property in Ireland. Tho Canterbury Education Board yesterday passed motions of condolence with !ho relatives of Corporal Frank T. Col'?Vlick, pupil teacher and student at the Normal Training College, who died of pneumonia at Troutham Military f'omp on November 7th, and Mr 13. Wilkinson, at one time> instructor in agriculture to tho Board. Dr. C. J. Reakes, Director-General of the Agricultural Department, will not accompany the French visitors to Duncdin. Ho will leave Cliristchurch this evening for Wellington, and will meet the visitors again in that city and accompany them on their trip through the Wellington province on their way back to Auckland. An old identity of the Wairarapa, M r James H. Taplin, died at his home at Akura, near Masterton, on Tuesday evening, at the ago of 74 years. Tho deceased, who was born in Oxfordshire, England, arrived at Lyttelton in the sailing ship Queen of the Mersey in IBG2. He was married to a daughter of tho lato Mr Alexander Yule, one of the earliest settlers, and leaves a grown-up family. In the reference in yesterday's issue to Colonel H. J. McLean, N.Z.M.C., who has been made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire, it should have been stated that ho was wounded whilst on service on Gallipoli, a shrapnel bullet lodging in his lungs. He was invalided home to England and had to be carried on board the hospital ship Maram a on his return to the Dominion. Colonel McLean again offered his services, which were accepted, despite the f "" J that the bullet had not been removed. TT' Laurence Simpson, manager of the Trustees, Executors, and Agency Company, Dunedin. has retired from tho active management of the company. Mr E. E. Clowes, the accountant of the company, has been appointed actingmanager. Mr Simpson came to Port Chalmers in January, 1863, in the ship Ben Lomond, and shortly aftor landing entered tho Government service as clerk and receiver of grold revenue on the Otago goldfields. He was then aDpomted a warden and magistrate. He continued his service as warden and magistrate in all parte of the province for sixteen years. Mr Simpson was apnointed resident magistrate of Dunedin in 1879, and this office he held till December, 1882, when he retired from the Government service to take up the important nosition of manager of the Trustee*. Executors, and Agencv Comnanv. which had just then been formed. Mr Simpson was the first manager of the company, nnd has hold the nosition for the past 35 years. Mr Simpson ■was one of the liquidators appointed hv the SntjroTrio Court in connexion witK the Colonial Bank of New Zealand.
