AN EMPIRE APPEAL.
Few people, if any, can realise tho amount of damage that has been done to the orchards, gardens, and .•aorseries in the countries that have been' devastated by the German hordes. More than 170,000 square miles have been ruined by the unspeakaule Hun, and it is for theso unfortunate Allies of ours, France, Belgium, and Serbia, that the Canterbury Sweet Pea and Carnation Society have boen naked by tho Now Zealand Representative' (Colonel Mayfield) of the War Horticultural Bolicf Fund, of which tlie patron, is H.M. •tho.lving, to take tho matter uj<, assisting our Allies, who have, in many cases, lost tho-moans of livelihood, by tho destruction of their gardens, orchards, and nurseries, the support of hundreds of thousands of the peasant owners The object of this Fund is restoration, by supplying seeds, plants, and cuttings, trees, tools,' and implements, together with export advice. It is the hope of the Royal Horticultural Society of England to raise One Million Pounds through the British Empire. The Canterbury Sweet Pea and Carnation Society is giving the whole of the proceeds of its Annual Show % on Thursday next, towards this object, and also solicits donations from all sympathisers. It is our privilege to be able to assist onr less fortunate Allies, and it is our interest as well as theirs that they be rapidly restored to prosperity. Donations may be sent to the President, 628 Colombo street, or fo the Treasurer, Mr B. C. Pratt, care of Christohurch Gas Company. All donations will be acknowledged in tho daily papers. W. J.
