• ? WHAKATANE BLOCK DESTROYED. (press association telegram.) WHAKATANE, January 9. A fire occurred here shortlv after 12.30 this morning, completely _ destroying a block of buildings, consisting of the King's Picture Theatre, antl the following sliopsJury (draper), lhompson (confectioner), Green (blacksmith), Lawrence (saddler). Stark (bootmaker), Follas (bootmaker), and Miss Lynch (music class room). The fire had obtained a firm hold before it was discovered. Fortunately, it was a night, and the brigade, by excellent work, prevented the fire spreading to the adjacent wooden buildings. The total losses in stock and buildings arc over £fiooo. The insurances aggregate £2489, in the New Zealand, South Bri- # tish, and Standard offices.
