Mr B. J. Cooke, who has announced his candidature for the Wairau electorate, ii a nativo of Marlborough. He is the eldest son of the late Mr William Cooke, well known as a general merchant in Blenheim, and since his father's death manager of the business. His mother's people have been in Marlborough for three generations, and on this side lie is a cousin of Colonel J- J* Esson. For some vears he has held a seat on the Blenheim Borough Council. He was first returned at a by-election. On the second occasion - ho tied for third place, and at the last election topped the poll by a hundred votes. He is a local preacher in connexion with the Methodist Church and has been for some ( year s the Young Men's Literary Class j n Blenheim.
