THE NEW WAR BONUS.

♦ FOR THE PUBLIC SERVICE. Mr G. F. C. Campbell, Secretary to tho Treasury, lias sent the following circular to* pornianent heads of depart raents of the Public Service in regard to tho new war bonus: —"I have to advise you that Cabinet has docided to double tho war bonus for the year commencing October Ist, 1918. The conditions will, however,! be somewhat different from those which obtained in the past. In cases where there have been increases of salary for any portion of the above period, increased bonus will not be paid for such portion of the year as may be covered by the increased pay. For instance, if salaries have been increased from January Ist, 1919 f the bonus would be payable at the old rate for the whole year 1918-1919, the double rato for the three months from October to December, 1918. 'Increased pay' does not mean the ordinary Bcale increases duo to classification, but special increases granted in addition to scale rates or duo to regrading. "The maximum emoluments. that will earn tho full amount of bonus will stand at £315 per annum as before, and for every £1 increase in emoluments over that sum there will be £1 decrease in the bonus payable. "Supposing a married man m the Service is entitled to recoive bv way. of emolument £320 for the year 1918-1919. and had not beon granted any special increase of salary during the year, ho would be entitled toßonus at the old rate for the twelve months, £15; bonus at the now rate for six months, £7 l£s £22 10s; less difference l>etween £320 and £315. £5; total, £17 10a. "A married man under similar conditions,. but whose salary lias been subject to special increase from, eay, January, I«]9. would be entitled to—Bonus ot tho old rate for the twelve months,' £15: bonus at the new rate for Octo-ber-December, £3 15s —£18 158, less as in former case, £5; total, £13 15e."
