After a conference with the Seamen's Union, the manager of the Union Company cabled the men's demands to the head office at Dunedin. A loply is expected to-day. As the shipping companies considered the demands exorbitant, the prospects of a settlement are not brignt. STRANDED AUSTRALIANS TS WELLINGTON. i*BESS ASSOCIATION* TELEGRAM.) WELLINGTON. January 8. The Mayor (Mr J. P. Luke, M.P.) informed a deputation of stranded Australians this morning that it was impossible to arrange passages on a cargo steamer, not because of the regulations, but because the alterations to provide accommodation would involve too much delay. He will communicate with the Commonwealth Prime Minister to see if the seamen nra preparod to man a steamer to bring stranded people back. Ho is also ursrincr Sir Janves Allen to place H.M.S. Philomel at the disposal of Australians for the trip. (Received January 9th, 12.50 a.m.) SYDNEY, January 8. There is no change in the 6hipping position.
