Daniels, Secretary of the Navy, said that he personally was opposed to the sinking of the surrendered Gorman warships. Ho thought that Admiral Rodman oniy advocated the sinking of tho old type of ships, but he believed that oven tneso could be used as training ships. A NARROW ESCAPE. LONDON. January 5. A steamer, carrying 2CCO soldiers on leave narrowly missed a floating mine while crossing the Channel. BRITISH BALTIC FLEET. AMSTERDAM, January 3. The British naval forces have heen withdrawn from tho eastern Baltic, owing to ice and floating mines, but are remaining in the western Baltic. BADEN TO BE HANDED OVER. (Australian and N.Z. Cablo Association.) (Renter's Telegrams.) (Received January 6tli, 7.45 p.m.) LONDON, January 5. The Baden, the newest German battleship. will shortly be given over under the armistice tonus. SUBMARINES LOST AND MINES SOWN. (Received January 6th, 7.45 _p.m.) LONDON, January 5. It is authoritatively stated that over two hundred German submarines were sunk during tho war, of which number the Germans destroyed fourteen. Mine-sweeping is proceeding on a large scale. Some minefields are 100 miles in extent. It is estimated that) 100,000 mines including drifters, have to be removed.
