KAIKOURA.

The-monthly meeting of the Kaikoura County Council was held on Saturday Present—Mr James Boyd (in the chair), and Crs. G. 1 tenner, Or. D, bmitij, S. Andrew. X. Horle, A. Pannell. A. J. ~Marshall, and F. 3. Monk.. *

Votes of sympathy wore passed to those who had suffered excavemen t through tiie war and the influenza epidemic., The Council agreed to pay trie expenses incurred by_ the Citizens' Committee in conticiion with the influenza epidemic, and 6pecial thank* _ were placed on record to those assisting, in the days of urgcncy. j The whole Council was formed into a committee, to arrange peace celebrations, h It was decided to pay Kaikoura's quota to Navy League Fund. - Support waA given to ihe resolution of the Alexandra Borough Council protecting! against - tuberculosis patients being sent to country towns. The Hastings Borough Council wrote with reference .to the necessity of strengthening tho financial position of the Public Health Department, and of extending ite powers to combat and control any epidemic that may arise. The Council endorsed the resolution. A deputation from the shopkeepers of the district waited on the Council in referenoe to changing tlto statutory half-holiday to Saturday, and it was resolved unanimously that Saturday be tho day of closing. ' Cr. Renner moved:—"That in order that as many residents of the Dominion as pos- , nible bo. «£forded an opportunity of seeing the vessels of the British Navy (to visit .New Zealand _ this year), the Prime Minister and the Minister of Marine be asked to do their utmostt'to induce the Admiral in charge of the squadron to arrange his itinerary so that the' ships of war shall, as far as is reasonably possible, pass along the const, and as close < thereto , as J can be done with perfect safety within the hours, of daylight." The motion was carricd. J. Nelson tendered his resignation as poundkeeper, which was accepted, nnd a month's salary voted him in recognition of hisi faithful work. •Sfr<'P..Kerr was appointed ,dog-tax collector. Cr. The Minister of Internal Affairs forwarded a circular _ giving Councils full liberty to ,make their own arrangements regarding peace celebrations. As this did not appear intelligible, it was decided to write to the Minister asking whether or not full liberty wouid include power to vote money out of the County fund.

The resolution of the Borough Council of Hastings, asking for improvements in the Department of Public Health, was approved. The Alexandra Borough Council wrote expressing its strong opinion that the Public Health Department should take the control and car© of incurable tuberculous patients. The Council recommended that all tuberculous patients should be under such control and care.

In reply to the Navy League's request for a grant, it was decided to vote £100. The clerk was instructed to enquire into frontager's duties as to gorse-clearing on adjacent used or unused roadlande.

Members agreed to inspect the Pound road ford over the Makirikiri for the purpose of deciding its suitability for a footbridge. Tho shingling contractor was authorised to widen the north approach of the Grey Bridge, and to effect needed repairs on the A ads of the east side of the County.
