THE BRITISH ELECTIONS.
SINN FEINER'S THREAT,
THE COUNTESS MARKEEVtCZ'S
ELECTION
(By Cable. —Press Aseocintion. —Copyright.) (Australian and N.«. Cabls Association.) LONDON, January 1. _ A Sinn Fein member states that if the Peace Congress fails to establish Ireland's independence the Sinn Feiners will attend the House of Commons and) "raise hell." , Correspondents point out that Countess Markievicz, being the wife of an. unn-aturalised Polo, is not a British subiect, and therefore cannot be elected to Parliament. Owing to Mr John Dillon's defeat the re-elected Nationalists will probably resign, allowing Sinn Feiners to replace them.
SINN FEINS' PROSPECTS DISMAL. (Reuter'a Telegraine.) (Received January 3rd. 7.45 p.m.) LONDON, January 1. The "Star's" Dublin correspondent st-ites that the Sinn Feiners' organisation renders unfavourable the summoning of a mimic parliament to frame a protective tariff and appoint Consuls at British ports. Its prospects are about as dismal as the ill-starred Chartist conventions of 1839. The Sinn Feiners owe their eloctoral success ijo a fatuous delusion that the Allies; whom Sinn Fein sympathisers hindored to the utmost, will now force England to grant complete independence. When the farmers realise that the Dublin Parliament is passing wastepaper resolutions, and never performing anything, the reign of the Sinn Fein will soon end. THE LABOUR PARTY. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) (Received January 4th, 1.25 a.nj.) LONDON, January 1. Mr J. H. Thomas, general secretary of the National Union of Railwaymen, and. one of the .pew members for Derby, interviewed, stated that believes Labour will assume the functions and responsibility of the official Opposition. There was a tendency to talk of industrial action or strikes to make up for the failure at the ballot box, but Labour's clear duty was to accept the electors' verdict. It might easily govern at nest election.
