ESCAPE OF MILITARY PRISONER,

(press association telegram.) AUCKLAND, January 3. A military prisoner named Ernest Moore made his escape at Mercer last night from the custody of a military policeman. Moore was before tho Police Court yesterday on a charge of a breach of the Military Service Act, by assuming a name other than that by which he has been commonly known. He was fined £15 and was to have been handed to the military authorities at Palmerston North. At Mercer the military policeman took Moore on to the station to get refreshments, and he took advantage of the chance to make his escape.
