(special to "the press.") INVERCARGILL, January 2. Royal' Step, who was a hot favourite for the Makarewa Trot, refused to strike a gait at the start, and lost all chance of winning. Ouimet began well, and pacing solidly looked to have the race in hand two furlongs from home, but F. 13. Jones on Dora Derby came with a good run and won by a nose. McLennan on Ouimet was perhaps a little too confident. Marsa jumped to the front in the Invercargill Cup, and, followed by Subterfuge, led all the way to romp in. Kilboyne was well placed over the early stages, and looked to be pulling hard in third position three furlongs from home, but he collapsed suddenly, and faded right out of it, finishing well back. He filled out' a lot when pulled up, and will probably bo benefited by the race. Rorke's Drift, Samiel, Kilbrogan, John Barleycorn, Burrangong, and Mazama were never in tho raco. The last-namod was lame behind. Royal Star, who got a very bad run, finished well in fifth place, arid might win a race before the Meeting closes. Spangle was tailed off last, over the first half-mile, and then finished well up.
The start • for tho Waikiwi Handicap was not good. Orderdown and Bellshire got all the best of it, while Kilmeedy who was very confidently supported by her people, got away last, and though 6he looked to have a cjiance three furlongs from the post, she oould not sustain her effort and dropped back.
Buller got out on the move in the Flying Handicap, while Braid and Daytime got wretched starts. Helicon won very easily, while Braid, who finished fourth, would have run into eecond place in a few more strides.
Kapuka Lass had the Oreti Trot won with six furlongs to go. The rest of tho field
failed to go steadily, and lei her away with a big break. Bon Spec, who was an edds on favourite for, the A venal "Welter, got out first and led all tho way, but Bombproof and Cave Rook had him nt top turning into the ehort straight, and for a few strides it looked as if the odds-on. chance would be beaten. Every" race is improving Bombproof. Hatty got the best of the et.irt for the Waihopai Handicap, and looked as if she would win all the way, but Golden King put in a goal run over the last quarter and beat her. Bandy, who finished fourth, was ridden a very bad race, or else ho would have been exceedingly hard to beat. Kilboyne will probably run in the 6print race tomorrow. SECOND DAY'S ACCEPTANCES. NOTES ON THE RACING. Tlie Amateur Handicap aroused little enthusiasm. Driftmin* began em"tly and leading from start to finish. won ably from Upstart. Of tie others, Algy Gee and Sandy Bell v;ere the only two lo make any sort of ft display. . , J. Brvco's stable -provided the winner ot the Innovation Handicap in Idris. His task v;a« made easy by several of his opponents leaving their feet. ..Silver Vut went a solid race. Ind had Idris doing his best. Hoymetta broke his hopplw. two furlongs from , home, and a tyre came loose from ttie sulky I of Pleasant Mount. Stanley L. was strono- - supported, but failed to_trot kindly. i The public made Our Goldie favourite for | tho Waimairi Handicap, and their judgment was sound, as the Harold Dillon mare won nicely at the finish. Koraki, who filled f*cond place, broke on several occasions, otherwise the result might have been differcn.. None of the others trotted up to expectations. Beeswing found her handicap too much, while Treasure Seeker and Mushroom started before their time and were called off. Nancy Stair led from the fall of the flag in the Mace Memorial Handicap, and lasted lone enough to win bv a small margin Irom Trix Pointer and Albert Cling. Tlio former was always handy, but_ at the end of a mile Albert Cling was running last, and did well to finish in third place. Lord Mm to was never dangerous. Erin« Q ueen . J. 83 •not in a generous mood, and raced unkindly. | Cora Dillon, Tamarisk, and Rorke a Drift were weU beaten four furlongs from home. Bundura began badly, and lost a lot or, ground. She came fast m the conchjding and was close up behind placed | division fourth. _ , _ ~ All started in the Park Lord Roanchild being backed down to odds on. He was in front at the end of twelve furlongs. but failed to stay, and' was unplaced at the finish. Gay Wilkee, the winner, made a couple of mistakes. He ha® a good turn of speed, and this enabled mm to maintain his position. He won all out from Paul Huon, who finished fast on the outBide, and paid a nice price for second place. Imperial Crown trotted very unsteadily. Reta Peter, Lady Patricia, and Truganini oil lost their chances by breaking early in the race. . Two back-markers in Sympathy and .Fax were and second in tho Bowl-ill Handicap. The former has raced most consistently during the holiday meetings, and fully deserved to win. Gold Crest broke up at the start, while Louie Drift, Rothcliff, and Wooddrift all performed indifferently. Admiral Wood scored a long overdue win in the SummeT Handicap. He was well placed in the earlv stages, and finishing full of running beat Irvar and Adelaide Direct. The latter put in a brilliant run, but failed to reach Admiral Wood.. John Dillon was amongst the second division at the end of a mile, but failed to race on. Beckom and Admiral Hal showed little or no pace, whilo Silver Quick was pulled up after going a furlong. The Farewell Handicap was the best betting race of the day. The favourite, General Wilkee, carried a quarter of thi money on tho maehir.e, and won with ridiculous 1 ease from Frank Tracey. Ariadne was in tlie l«ad at the end of fouT furlongs, but over the last quarter he began to stop, and was well beat»n at the finish. Both Lord Dillon and Silver Quick made mistakes. Lord Minto finished a bod last.
