SPORTING.

RACING AND TROTTING NOTES. (Br "Looker-On.") There are only two race meetings set down for to-day. In the North Island tie Hawke's Bay'' Jockey Club's Slimmer Meeting will be brought to a conclusion, and in the South Island the Southland Racing Club's Summer Meeting will be commenced. The latter fixture, with the ( Invercargill Cup of 1000 sovs and the Flying-'Handicap of 400 boys as :he principal features, is attracting much attention, and Riccarton stables will bo fairly well represented at the fixture. Sun l>ance, who won the Midsummer Handicap at Auckland yesterday, is the first of the progeny of the imported sire Sunny Lake to win a race in the Dominion. Sun Dance i 9 owned by Mr G. L .Stead, and is a chestnut filly from Showano, by St. Ambrcec— Savanna, by Stepniak—SeashelL Gloaming's' victory in the Great Northern Derby yesterday brought his record to seven starts, sis wins and one second. In Australia in the spring he won the Chelmsford Stakes and the A.J.C. Derby. Returning to New Zealand, lio won the Champion Plato at the Wellington Spring Meeting, and coming on to Riccarton, was successful in the New Zealand Derby, but was beaten by Saeanof in tho Stead Memorial Stakes. At Ellerslie last Saturday he had no difficulty in beating Sasanof in the Islington Plate, and yesterday he proved himself easily the best of .the three-year-olds racing in the Dominion. Tho falling off in the totalizator receipts at the various race meetings in Now Zealand during tho Christmas holidays, compared with last; year, cannot be attributed to either shortage of money or to an improvement in t.ho habits of the people. It has been solely duo to tho influenza epidemic (says a North Island exchange). Apart from the fact that scores of tho best-known "sports" of tho Dominion have succumbed to the diseafte, hundreds of people who usually patronise the racecourse have this year abstained from doing so. Tho traffic by road and railway has been much smaller than in former yeare. People have, perhaps wisely, declined to take the risk attending tho congregation of unknown people in the train and upon the racecourse. (Br "Searchlight.") Nominations close at noon to-morrow for tho Wellington. Trotting Club'a Annual Meeting. J. W. Thomas, ' driver of Gold Crest in the Templeton Handicap yesterday, was fined £10 for interference and careless driving in the, race. While competing "in the Christmas Handicap on the second day of tho Auckland Trottiag Club's Summer Meeting, Locanda Dillon struck himself in front, and will require a few days spell on returning to Methven. At a spccial meeting of the Westport Jockey Club on Monday an inquiry was held into the riding of Prince Huon at the March Mooting aa instructed by the Trotting Association. The committee resolved that it was of the opinion that Prince Huon was ridden to the best judgment and that ho raji consistently throughout tho Meeting. '

There were several heavy showers during the morning , and when the racing commenced the outlo6k was decidedly threatening. A few showers during tho early part of the programme culminated in a heavy downpour as the Champion Handicap was being run, and though after this the weather cleared, a keen wind made itself unpleasantly felt. Under the circumstances, the attendance was very good, but the totalisator investments showed a decrease, the amount being £27,581, as compared with £32,090 last year. But for the rain, the -track would have been in first-class order, and though it was not seriously affected, it was naturally somewhat slow. The racing was very interesting, and appropriately enough the Champion Handicap produced the best finish of the day. Cathedral Chimes showed a return to his real form, and J. Bryoe, who was making his first appearance on the track since his I accident at Addington, in November, was given a very hearty reception when liebrought tho winner ljack. The management of the Meeting was up to the usual high standard, and tho officials are entitled to congratulations. Details of the racing are: AMATEUR HANDICAP (in harness), of 13S eore, with bracelet value 15 sovs added; second 25 sovs, third 15 sova. She was in front at the end of a mile, and won easing up from Ilothino, who- finished fast. They were firet and second favourites, and pr&cticaiiy had the race to themselves. Sympathy went a solid race in the Temnleton Handicap, but found the handicap of 7acc which she had to concede to Gold Crest " —the winner-too great. The field was a small one, but the rac© was full of interest, as at different intervals more than one competitor was proclaimed the winner. Both Louie, Drift and Harold Child were prominent for a mil© and a half, but failed to ee« tho journey oat.

Representatives of Oakhampton Lodge o©cupied first and second pluccs iu iho Champion Handicap, Cathedral Chiracs winning in great otylo from his et-ablo 'mate, Sherwood, who was in receipt of 6sec. Sungod »gain raced consistently, finishing a. good third. Emilius wus prominent for a mile and » lialf, when he left his foet, and failed to strike a gait aguin. Oinako practically took no part in tho race, as ho failed to go away correctly. Owing to his excellent form at Aahburton Itorkos Drift was made a warm favourite in tho Lyttolton Handicap, but more than met his equal in Mahinga. who ©aaily beat him over the la£t four furlongs. Rothcliff went unsteadily, while "Wooddrift broke up before going ft hundred yards. Beeswing led from start to finish in the Stewards' Handicap, and won pulling up ■ from Imperial Crown, who made a couple of bud mistakes during the race. Had h® gon« eieadily tho SockLurn-trained trotter would probably have troubled the winner. Patricia showed speed in patches, but would not settle down. Eloctrocuto gave a poor di»play. After being well placed in the early atafjoa of the Islington Handicap, Trix Pointer went to the front at tho end of a mile, and won comfortably from Willie Lincoln. Bunaurir and Cora Dillon wero handy for a mile, but failed to slay on. Lord Mint? lacked da»n, and finished a long way behind the placed Joan of Arc began smartly in the Hallway Handicap, but before going a furlong eh» broke, and was never again piommcnt. Tn®winner, Rorke's Drift, scored a long overdue win by defeating the Ashburton-trained griding Joyful after an interesting conteat owr the last hundred yards. Pax went lo a brealt at tho start, and was not persevered Willi. Koobeni, Silver Quick, The Linnet, and Be* X)iHoil were never nrominent-. The An Revoir Handicap did not a,raua« much interest. Rearguard, on the.limit, went away smartly, accompanied by b l * Elmo. The latter was soon don© with, ana. Rearguard maintaining the lead, won easily" from Pax, who finished fast. Tiranna <-fffer--1 cd a lot of extra ground at the start. Had she gone away correctly tho result would probably hav e 'been different. Great Britain I the favourite, had every chance to make a I nam© for himself, but at'the end of four furlongs ho faded awaj*. and ultimately »H------ialiod fifth. Louie Drift did not go correctly; wbil© Scottish Queen had a mishap, at the start. , . . •• J Bryco's reaopearance in the en 1"? **£ greeted with heart v applause as he entered the enclosure with Cathedral Chimes to.conteat the Champion Handicap, which was renewed when the . eon of Four Chimes was returned the winner. Cathedral Chimes, who won tho earn© race twolve months ago, is again at the top of his form. , NEW BRIGHTON" T.C.'S SUMMER MEETING. Tho Now Brighton Trotting Club> will hold its summer fixture to-day. . The fields in mo«l of the races are largo, and as the tracß ia in good order some interesting racing should be witnessed.
