Wilcox, Assistant Superintendent of Mercantile Marine at LytWton, has been appointed chief clerk of the Marine Department at Wellington, and his position at Lyttelton wil| be taken by Captain isurge?s, Government surveyor of ships at Wellington. v . ' . 0 The Moeraki arrived in port yesterday ■morning from Sydney, via Wellington, and discharged cargo consigned to Lyttelton and Dunedin. The vessel sailed in the evening for. Wellington, whence she will return -o Sydney and Hobart. , , The Maaa will probably arrive here to-day with cargo from Wanganui. ' The Breeze and Calm ar® expected aeie •to-morrow from southern ports to load for Wellington and Wanganui. The Kittawa will complete her discharge of southern cart?o to-day, and sail at midday for the West Coast. The Kini, laden with coal and timber for Lyttelton, ia still bar-bound at Greymouth. She may bo able to clear the West Coast leaves Wellington this afternoon, and arrives here to-morrow moming to load for' Nelson and New Plymouth, for which porta she will depart on Saturday m The Waitomo, with a quantity of general careo from Calcutta, is duo here on Saturday morning. The vessel. is coming via Auckland and Wellington. On completing her© she will procecd to Dunedin. sailing on occurred at Auckland la»t week of Mr A. B. Speakman, who for many yeara wos conneoted with the Huddart-Paxker Company. Mr Speakman, who was a nativo of Hobart, joinedjfne company s service over twenty years agtST and for. rowy years acted as purser on the Australian and New Zealand coast. For some years he was attached to the Auckland office, and retired about a veare ago owing to ill-With. Mr SpeaJtman, who was 39 years of age, leaves a widow and '"The' need of a vessel to take the place of the sunken Wimmera on the Sydney-Auck-land run was .discussed at the Auckland Chamber of Commerce. Mr K. .Burns, tne president, said that the Waent a private deputation on &e subject to Sir James Allen, who had replied that l *® would pive his sympathetic attention to the matter, though the difficulty in the way of replacing the Wimmera was the scarcity oi steamers. Later a shipping representative hfldßUSgcsted a way by which a steamer could Be obtained, and he bad written to the ActingPrime Minister, from whom he was expecting an early answer. Giving evidence before the Wellington Military Service Board on Tuesday, Mr G. Allport (Secretary of the Marine Department) stated <hat there were at pr:eent twelve vacancies in the lighthou-e stafl. Not only had the Department been quite unable to fill tli* vacancies, "but they had found much difficulty in getting even temporary men to carry on the work.

The two nautical assessors to sit on the WimraTa enquiry will be Captain McArthur, of Wellington, and Captain R-E- Smith, of Auckland. The Hon. T. M.
