WHEAT QUESTION.
MINISTER'S COMMENTS. (PIIESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WELLINGTON, July 17. Tie Minister of Agriculture, speaking at the meeting of tiie Council of Agriculture to-day, referred to the wneat question. He said the outlook for producing sufficient wheat for our own requirements was not very bright at present. The principal reason against the good production of wheat was that the farmers in the chief wheat-growing areas had had two or three very bad seasons. These farmers had risen to the occasion, and tried to do their best, but the weather being against them, they did not get the best returns from their lamd. It had been anticipated that tho area sown last year would have given lis a surplus, butinstead there had been a shortage, and the Government had had to purchase from Australia. This country should be independent of Australia. Farmers could not be expected to go in for an industry which was not a payable proposition, as there was no other course open for the Government than to assist the farmers in this matter.
