DEMAND FOR INCREASED PAY

(PIIESS ASSOCIATION* TELEGRAM.)

WELLINGTON, July 16. In view of the lapse on the 30th November next, of the present industrial agreement between tho Merchant Service Guild and the Union Steam Ship Company, the Blackball Coal Co., and the Wcstport Coal Co., tho captains and deck officers in the service of those companies are taking steps to obtain all-round increases in pay. In the_ demands for .a new agreement, which have already been drawn up by the Guild, substantial increases arc sought. The reasons given arc tho higher rate of wages ruling in England and elsewhere, and tho increased cost of living. The captains and mates of coastal steamers arc not affected by the movement, as their agreement is for the duration of the war.
