BOROUGH COUNCILS.
NEW BRIGHTON. The New Brighton Borough Council met last night. Present—The Mayor (Mr J?, -h-iuoiov»iiitc) anil Crs. i;\ christian, B. Browning, 0. H. Winny, J. Buxton, iS A. Leaver, A. W, Owles, O. lsroeison, and Siccock. Mr G. T. Kobinson applied for a special order giving him permission to erect a dwelling- on a section sinalier* than - that -provided for in the by-laws. Referred to the Bylaws C'pmmittee. Mr J. A. Flcsher was appointed the Borough Council's solicitor. 'l'he Tramway -Board wrote, declining to contribute towards the cost , of the broom barricade on tho esplanade and regretting it could not co-operate in acquiring land I under the Public \V orks Act for road widen- j ing purposes at the corner of Bowhill road and tho Esplanade.—Keceived. It w&s decided to piosccuto'ft resident for cutting down trees in the Domain without the permission of the Council* Mr T. H. Strahan complained of the condition of the North ICspianade road. —Referred to the Works Committee. It-W&s decided to write to' the member for the district and the various local bodies in and around Ohristchurch, asking for their support in connexion with the establishment of sola salt works at South New Brighton. •In reply to the appeal of tho Canterbury Progress League, it was decidcd to vote £5 sb, the Council expressing its regret that owing to the heavy calls upon its funds, t was unable to vote a largbr sum. / The Finance and By-laws Committee recommended that the engineer of the Timaru Harbour Board be asked to act as the I Council's valuer in connexion with the purchase of the New Brighton pier, and that the Council's solicitor be requested to communicate with the engineer in the matter; that the Town Clerk be instructed to sue for all rates and outstanding accounts without further notice; that those interested in the proposed loan for North Esplanade and Berry street be informed that the Council cannot see its way to agree to the proposed loan area. —Adopted. . SUMNER. f : The Sumiier Borough Council met last night. Present—The Mayor (Hon. J. Barr, M.L.C.), Councillors T. E. Whitfield, H. C. Jamieson, T. Dryburgh. R. Piercy, A. Senior, C. Benjamin, J. H. Globs, W. J. Lawson. The Sumner Fire Brigaded invitation to its annual social was accepted. The Burgesses' Association wroto, suggest; ins that the memorial lamp be re-orect«a near the band rotunda on the Esplanade. The referred to the Work® Comm The Association also wrote, suggesting that the name of Jlulgan's track be changed to Princess Walk. No action vrtis taken. Mr D. Mafley applied to have laid on to his property.
