Mrs G. W. Russell and Miss Russell are in Auckland, where they attended the opening by the Countess of Liverpool of the new Hospital for Children.
Mrs Morris and Mrs Cuttcu liavcr como down from tho North Island on holiday. They aro spending several weeks at tho Hydro Grand, in Timaru. The Hon. E. Mitchelson and Mrs Mitchelson (Auckland) aro visiting Christchurch - at present.
The engagement is announced of Miss Doris Mclntyro, only daughter of Mr and Mrs T. H. 31clntyre, of Lower Hutt, "Wellington, to Staff-Q.M.S. Lan A. Mackay, only son of Mrs K. J. Mackay, of Parnell, Auckland.
On Saturday an enjoyable evening party for girls was given at the homo of Miss Chaiilin, in Selwyn street, in aid of tho 'Christmas Parcels Fund. Musical and elocutionary items were contributed by Misses E. Foster, M. Woodward, Allen, 15. and F. Holland, R. Bascand, P. Stringer, ltutter, M. Rogers, and G. Harris, while there wore two competitions, the prize-winners being Misses L. Cocker and C. Parke. About GO parcels were received, as well as £1 Is in monetary contributions. The Governor-General and tho Countess of Liverpool recently gave a series of informal receptions to the citizens of Auckland. One of these took place at Government House last Thursday. Her Exccllency received in a frock of brown charmeuse with ninon sleeves and adornments of brown and gold passementerie. Her large black hat had putty-coloured trimmings, and she also wore a brown fur cape-stole.
The engagement is announced of Miss Thorold Clerk, daughter of Mr and Mrs Duncan E. Clerk, Arney road, Remuera, to Captain C. A. Stokes, Tnird South Persian Rifles, Middlesex Regiment,
Tho Misses Burbury and Nixon havo resigned their positions on the stalf at the Christchurch Hospital, and hope to take up military work again shortly. Mrs Gerald Stead> is visiting Christchurch.

Last week's ladies' match at the Shirley links was won by Mrs Murphy. Tho prize was presented by Mrs J. Hall.

WEDDINGS. At Carnarvon on Wednesday, Miss Phyllis C. McKenzie, daughter of Mrs T. McKenzie, of Clydesdale, married to Captain 11. W. Wrightson, M.C., son of the late Dr. "Wrightson, of Aldsburgh, England. Tho Rev. 11. L. Fountain, of Bulls, performed the ceremony. " The bride was given away by Mr Colvin McKenzie, and wore a bridal gown of white embroidered silk, veiled in shell pink ninon. Tho bridesmaids were Misses Nancy Scott and Marguerite Hastie, and Lieutenant Gray was best man. The wedding was celebrated at To Rehunga on Wednesday afternoon by the Rev. 13. Stephenson, of Mr Charles Philip Hickrnott, youngest son of Mr G. Hickmott, of Collingwood, and Miss Edith R. Fletcher, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs G. Fletcner, Papanui, Christchurch. Though Miss Fletcher was a new arrival in the district the church was crowded, and there was also a large attendance at the breakfast held subsequently at Mr Fletcher's house. The bride was gieen away by her brother. Mr G. C. Fletcher, of Wairoa, and Mr H. Fergus acted as best man. The bride looked channing in a dress of white silk, with silk and pearl trimming, and she wore tho customary veil and orange blossoms, and carried a handsome bouaust. The chief bridesmaid was Miss Mavis Fletcher, ftf Wairoa, who looked very prettv in a dress of blue voile with touches of pink and black velvet, 7/ith hat trimmed to match. . There were also two little maids in white satin de luxe, embroidered in pink silk, who carried white horse shoes, with orange blossoms and white silk streamers. Jfr H. Phillips officiated at the organ.

TO-DAY'S RECIPE. .Oatmeal Soup.—Bring two and a half pints of water to the boil. Stir in half a breakfast-cupful of rolled.oats. Salt. Add three small potatoes, peeled and cijt into dice, and a sliced onion. Simmer for half an hour, stirring from time to time. Dissolve one tablespoonful of fat, stir in one tablespoonful of. flour, and cook until brown. Add to the soup; stir well, and continue cooking until the oatmeal is ready. Serve as hot as possible.
