DEPARTING SOLDIERS.

A social, organised by the Federal Kugby League Club, was hold in the Foresters' Hall on Saturday evening to bid farewell to Gunner "W. J. Mitchell, who is down on final leave. There was a large attendance of footballers, all the Christchurch clubs being well represented. Mr Putnam occupied the chair and the toast li3t was as follows: — "The King" (Mr Putnam)), "Kindred Clubs," proposed by Mr Bowden, responded to by Messrs Sales (Hornby), McLaughlin (Avon), Morris (Linwood), and Putnam (Sydenham), "The President," responded to by Mr T. B. Pike, "Gunner Mitchell," proposed by Mr A. E. Hooper and Mr W. Moylc, "Returned Soldiers," proposed by Mr Putnam and responded to by Mr Moyle. Mr Brunsden, club captain, presented Gunner Mitchell with an luminous wristlet watch and a money belt. Eulogistic reference was made by the different speakers to the -sterling character of the recipient and of his great assistance to League football since its inception. Musical items were given by Messrs "Withers, Glove, Sullivan, Bernard, Griffith, and MclntyTe. Private R. Hatcher was presented with a smoker's companion and shaving set by his fellow workers on the City Council reserves staff. Mr Wickens, head gardener, made the presentation^ On Saturday the staff at Messrs Boon and Co, met to bid farewell to Mr A. Boon, who recenty obtained his certificate at the Canterbury Aviation School. Mr J. A. Bull, on behalf of his shopmates, expressed the pleasure all felt at Mr Boon's succcss, and as a small token of their appreciation, presented him with a pair of military hair brushes suitably engTaved, together with a pocket knifo and box of cigarettes.
