LINCOLN. On "Wednesday evening the students of the Lincoln Agricultural College gave a repeat concert, tho following contributing to the programme: Messrs E. Hoooer, Nicholl, Wilson, Dnstin, Anso, Ha'rkness, Chalmers. Higgens. Montgomery, Galder, Turner, Lewis, Pratt, Elliot, . Holgerson, Hallenstein. Tankersly, Pennycook, Bond, and Stephenson. The Red Cross and Navy League Funds will greatly benefit bv the efforts of the students. *0n Friday evening the members of the' Lincoln Young Men's Club held their fortnightly danco in. the Druids' Hall. There was a large attendance. A vocal item was given by Mr Goodman. Tho following supplied the dance music: —Messrs Fuller, H. Riches, and E. Townshend. Mr C. L. Jarman was M.C. The ladies provided supper.

SOUTHBRIDGE. Mr C. H. i'iper presiued over the monthly meeting or tho Southbridge Town xioard, heid on Tnureday evening. A resolution of sympathy was carried with the widow ana family ox the late Dr. Withers, who served on the Board for many years, and was a member up to the time of his death. The Works Committee reported that unsuccessful ettorta had been made to obtaih shingle lrom a pit in the township for road repair worK. It was therefore decided to allow the repairs to stand over for the present. Tho Hall Committee reported that certain repairs had been ettected at tho Town Hall. Some discussion took place with regard to the collecting of hawkers' license fees from travellers for city firms, but no definite decision was arrived at. Mr Appleton mentioned that he was shortly leaving the district, and asked whether, in view of the fact, that the oi-ennial election was to be held in September, he should resign his seat, necessitating tho holding of an extraordinary election. The chairman replied that it would.be better for Mr Appleton to continue in office until September. The members all referred to the useful work done by Mr Appleton as a member of the Board, and wished him success in his business venture in the North Island.

LEESTON. The returned soldiers occupying portions of the Leeston settlement have lately been trying to get someone to undertake the ploughing of their holdings, but their efforts and the efforts of Mr W. Holley in the same direction, have been unsuccessful, farmers being too busy with their own. work to undertake outside contracts. Mr "• "• Jamieson interested himself in the matter, and arranged with a number of farmers to hola a working bee, recognising that it would be a hardship on the soldier farmers if they were unablo to crop their holdings this season. There were 60 acres of land to be ploughed, and the bee was to have been held a fortnight ago, but the wet weather prevented it. However, during last week teams sent by the following farmers each put in a day on the settlement: Three-furrow ploughs— Messrs Fussell Uros., W. Johnston, x. H. Barnett. G. M. Lochhead, D. Hampton, and H. Neave; double-furrow ploughs—Messrs A. E. Brown. W. Parkin, G. H. Barnett, T. J. Gilbert, P. Chamberlain, and D. McDonald. Several other farmers have promised to helD, and the ploughing will probably be finished this week. At the Leeston sale on Friday, the Farmers' Co-operative Association of--1 fered 40 acres of land at Lakesidein the estate of R- and_ J. Lochhead. The property was passed in. at £14 per acre. The annual meeting of the £/Uesmere Ploughing Match Association was held at Leeston on Friday, the president, Mr EL G. Hubbard, presiding. The showed a credit of 413 <H lid. The retiring officers were remonthly meeting of the Leeston School Committee th& reported tha roll number to-be 89 *nd the average attendance '3- Wet weather and minor ailments accounted for the poor average. The committee decided last month, to affiliate with the School Committees' Association, and copies of the report and balance-sheet and rules, were received. As it would be inconvenient for members of .he committee to attend meetings of the Association, it was decided to appoint a proxy. Replying to a letter enquiring when the old class room was to bo removed, the Board of Education

stated that the architect- would visit the school as soon as possible. The Rev. W. Laycock presided over the quarterly meeting of office-bearers of the l.eeston Methodist circuit. The statement of accounts showed a credit | on the quarter's working. The Rev. j Mr Bailey wrote, stating that he re- ■ gretted he was unable to accept the | invitation to conduct a mission at j Dun;andel. A letter, bearing the ii~- ■ natures of several Christchurch "women, was received, bringing under notice the case of a certain religions objector, who, the letter alleged,- had been ill-trentcd by the military authorities. Tho Sunday school reports, which, were considered satisfactory, stated that a school had been opened at Southbridge with a roll of 21. It. was agreed that the. IRWELL. Tile annual meeting cf the lrweil lied Cross branch was held at the residence of the president, Mrs T. A. Stephens, on Thursday. A detailed re- , nort upon the year's work was presented hv the secretary, Miss N. Doak. In addition to the work carried out, various appeals had been liberally responded to, among the donations being £20 to the "Our Day" Fund and £20 to the Blanket Fund. The balanJesheet showed that the expenditure *or the year was £149 17s 9d. Mrs Younj; presented a report on the Lady Liverpool Fund operations. Officers were elected as follows: President, Mrs T. A. Stephens; vice-president, Mrs W. Young; secretary and treasurer, Miss X. Doak; auditors, Cantain J. Coe and Mr John lieslop. A sum of £20 was voted to the Prisoners of War. Fund. The usual votes of thanks ; were passed.

. ASI-IBURTON. A social and dance was held in the Alford forest school to welcome home Private H. K. Wilson. During the evening Private Wilson was presented with a geld medal. After supper had bceu served a danco was held.

A draft of 10 reservists for the Forty-fourth Iteiniorcements will leave Ashburton to-day. At the last meeting of the Mount Somers lioad Boaxd, it was decided to repair and shingle the road from the Stavoley store to Smith's corner, and to appiy to the Ashburton County Council'lor pipes for four more waterrace crossings. The sum of £10 was voted to tho Prisoners of War-Fund. Mr T. Bright was instructed to use th« 3 grader for 'clearing the snow jn the Main road. Tho annual meeting of the Ashburton Technical School Board was held on Friday, Mr C. Reid presiding. Tho chairman reviewed tho work of the year, and suggested that the school should co-operate with the A. andll. Association in encouragiug Eeed production. Mr Reid was re-elected chairman and Mr R. Collins treasurer. Mr W. G. Uillier was elected to the executive. Other officers elected were: — Grounds and Agricultural Committee, Messrs J. Tucker, W. T. Ldl, G. Schneider, and C. Reid; Building Committee, Messrs G. W. Andrews, J. Watson, W. G. Hillier, J. Borthwick, and C. W. Nicoll. The Director, suggested tho appointment of an assistant instructor in metal work and drawing.

TEMUKA. Tho Temuka members of the 44th Reinforcements ■ were ■ entertained at the Dominion Theatre on Friday evening, wiicn tiiere was a. largo attcudunco. Mr T. Gunnion presided. The programme for the evening was in the hands of a local minstrel troup, under Mr James Johnson, and their entertainment was much appreciated. Musical selections were played by the 'lemuka Patriotic Orchestra, songs wero given by a number of friends, and a dance was given by Miss F. Shaw. The chairman tnanked the people for their attendance, and the Ramblers for thoir entertainment, and, with the Rev. A. H. Norris, made a strong appeal for funds for the monthly parcels for the soldiers. Mrs Aspinall presented a holdall to each of the soldiers, who included G. Robinson, W. Knight, and J. Foster. The takings at the door amounted to £23 7s 6d. . . The annual meeting of the lemuka Red Cross Society was .held in the Parish Hall on Thursday evening. Prosent.—Mr A. R. Guild (chairman), Mesdanies Aspinall, James, Bilton, and Bates, Messrs C. J- Bilton, J. T. Smart, A. E. Rawson, J. Brickell, E. B. Cooper, and C. Bates. The annual report stated that several efforts had been made during the year to raise funds. The stalls at the sports resulted in £72 being raised. A sheep drive and surprise packet day were held, through which £840 was added to our funds. Sundry donations, subscriptions, etc., amounted, approximately, to £300. The balance-sheet showed a credit on March 31st of £309. A total of 11,537 articles had been dispatched to various hospitals. Mr A. R. Guild was re-elected chairman for the ensuing year, Mr T. Gunnion vice-president, Mr C. J. Bilton treasurer, Mr H. Bell secretary, and the Building Committee was also elected —Mesdames Aspinall nnd Billton, Messrs Blacbmoro, Bates, Bilton, Tillbrook, Frew, Armitage, Rawson. and the Rev. A. H. Norris, Shaw, Storry, and E. B. Cooper.

WAIMATE. At the monthly meeting of the committee of the A. and P. Association, Mr J. H. Milne presiding, the date of the Patriotic Show , was tbced for November 14th. It was decided to set to work early in the matter of securing judges, especially for the Border Leicester classes, in view of the institution this year of the fifty guinea championship cup, and tie twenty guinea junior cup. The meat-storage question was discussed. Mr W. Co&th read a telegram just received from Mr J. C. Studholme, stating that little information was available in Christchurch regarding what steps freezing companies were taking to cope with the position. It was resolved that the president and vice-president should meet the executive of the Farmers' Union at Timaru, and stress the need for energetic action.
