Tie Wootton is to W general cargo at Lyttelton to-day for Wellington, for •which port Bhe sails this evening. . . Tho Putiki, with cargo from Wellington, la due here to-morrow, and will Bail for the North on Monday. ( , , Captain Sprin-g-Brown, who has been in command of tho ferry steamer Mararoa, relieving Captain Cameron, has gone to Sydney on tho Riverina. Captain Cameron, who in the meantime haa been relieving Captain Irwin on the Patecna, has resumed command of the Mararoa, and Captain Irwin lias returned to the Pateena. , ~ . The Orepuki is cxpeoted to nuta© tiiis port by to-morrow, from Greymouth, whence ehe returns on completing here, sailing on TuesdiLaden with general cargo from Dunedin, the Corinna ia duo here on Thursday next, to load for Nelson and New Plymouth. The Kaiika , with, coal from the Weet Coast, reached this port yesterday. It is expect cd that she will sail to-night for GreyWith tlie remainder of her Melbourne cargo to discharge, the Kuiapoi is expected to eail from Wellington to-night for this port, being due here to-morrow. After discharge here she will load cargo for Timaru. The Monowai is now advertised to leave Dunedin on Monday for Northern ports. She is due here on Tureday morning, and sails in the evening for Auckland, via porta. The collier Kittawa, which has been delayed at Wcstport by heavy seaa, was timed to lravo the West Coaet port last night for Timaru and Lyttelton, with coal.

Tho Union Steam Ship Company have adopted the "Salvus" life jacket, invented by Mrs Beaumont, the wife of Captain Beaumont, shipping master at Dunedin. This incket has comm?nd'*l a fjr*at dool of attention throughout tho world, and was adopted by the British AdomaUy some time ago. One hospital ship ha® been fitted with a certain number of these jackets in New Zealand for itho use of cot CQ6O6, and the nursing eisters. These jackcts are tho only ones which _ a patient can sleep in with comfort.
