LONDON, July 11Lord Jellicoe, speaking at Southampton, said that his prophecy that submarines would be defeated by August was perhaps unguarded, but although 6hips were still being sunk they were being built faster than they were being sunk, while the submarines were being sunk faster than they were being built. That was what he meant when he said that submarines would be defeated. He had every confidence m the future. NEW YORK, July 10. Wireless were received by the captain of tho liner from the Augve'.d (theXorwegian vessel which was torpedoed and sunk on July Bth)_ early on Monday morning, causing him to awter his course. The liner was not camouflaged and was unarmed. It is believed that a U-boat had notice of a steamer sailing from Chile with nitrates for use in making munitions. One torpedo swished alongside the steamer, narrowly missing, and a second passed close astern.
