BRITISH POLITICS
POSITION OF MR ASQUITH
(By Cable.—Presa Association.—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.)
LONDON, July 9. There are many rumours in politic?.! circles that Mr Lloyd George and Mr Bonar Law approached Mr Asquith and suggested that he should become leader of tlie House of Commons, and thuß definitely attach himself to the Coalitbn, otaerwibe Government candidates would oppose Mr Asquith's followers at the geneial election. This, combined ivith the opposition of the Labourites, would probably result in the virtual extiir : . tion of Liberalism. In the event of Mr Asquith's acceptance, and in view of tho fact that iie holds the Liberal funds, Mr Lloyd George would be confirmed in the leadership. The political position is one of extremo piquancy, in view of the circumstances in which -Mr Asquith left tho office, and tho "Daily News" continually attacking Mr Lloyd George. The position is complicated by the fact that the Northcliffe newspapers, referring to the new rumours, intimate that thev will oppose the Government if Mr Asquith is allowed to re-enter it.
