FIRE BOARD
MONTHLY MEETING
Tho Christchurch Firo Board met last night. Present—Messrs 11. Holland (chairman), H. P. Hopkins, U. J. Kcrruish, H. R. Rusbridge, and F. Burgoyne. Dennis Brothers wroto respecting th© price of a motor pump on order by the Board, intimating that they could not now supply the pump at the price quoted. It was decided to ask them to quote tho price at whicli they could make th e pump, but not to proceed with its manufacture till the Board Jiad an opportunity of discussing the new price. Messrs H. Matson and Co. wrote thanking the Board for deciding to keep their pre* mises at Addington on the guaranteed list for another twelve months. Tho Board of Trad© wrote that it was not responsible for tU© classification of essential users of petrol, and asked if the Board had been interfered with in th« matter of obtaining supplies. It was decided to reply that there had been no interference. Tho District Telegraph Engineer wroto that tho Telegraph Department's charge to the Board for tho maintenance of the Board s own. telephono lines covered tho cost of keeping the circuit in working order. Mr J. A. Casaidy (on behalf of Meears Turnbull and Jones) wrote that what h» clients complained of was that their lire alarms had lxeu disconnected without tho Board consulting them. Tho letter was received. , Tho superintendent reported:—lsine calls were rccclvod between Juno Oth and tbs 6tu inst.; one was a malioious fals© alarm, one I a chimney firo, and seven vrexo tor actual firefl; loss in/respect to last-mentioned, £20. « Regarding tho Railway Firo Brigade, the 'Superintendent reported against its suggested disbursement. His report stated:— "Durine the operations at a tecent firo in this vicinity of Carlyle street, it was found that the City high pressure water supply was unequal to tho demands made upon it, therefore should a largo outbreak ooour in any of the railway eoods sheds in or near that locality it will probably lv> necessary to fall back on tho railway supply, which means that tho steamer will have to_b© requisitioned for pumping into tho mains on their properly as aforementioned. I consider it would be a retrograde step (in view of the largo amount of uroperls; which tho Department 'is morally responsible for) |to disband the Railway Fire Brigade. I am'of opinion that the Department should encourage the men bv adopting some scheme whereby thay could bo called upon by alarm hello or telephone. I am strongly opposed to the su?gcstlon to diebandon tho Hail way I' ire Brigade." The report was adoptodT _
