GERALDINE DEVIATION.
DISCUSSED BY PROGRESS
LEAGUE.
At yesterday's meeting of tho Canterbury Progress League, referenco was made to the proposed Orari-Geraldine-Rangitata deviation of the BluffHurunui line.
Mr W. J. Jenkin, who introduced tho subject, said that although the deviation might be outside the territorial jurisdiction of the League, the proposal was of importance to the whole of Canterbury, and tho Leaguo should, if possible, give some support to it. Tho proposal nad been placed before the railway authorities, who had riven it a good hearing. The proposed deviation was 92 mil6s, as compared with 6 miles between Orari and Kangitata by the present line. It would not alter the present time-table, as the stop at Rangitata <to allow the trains to pass) is from 9'io 15 minutes, and this delay would 1 be obviated. He suggested that the League should co-operato with the South Canterbury League in the matter. The chairman (Mr H. Holland) said that the, deviation would bo of great benefit to tho city—the Council 1 had valuable reserves at Geraldine, the value of which would bo enormously incrcfis^di MV p. R. Climie thought it would be a good move for the League to express an opinion on the matter,-and would show the country people that the Leaguo was not a town organisation. On the suggestion of tho chairman, it was decided to rtite to the South Canterbury League, informing it of the representations made to the League on tho subject, and asking for the South Canterbury League's views on it.
