LIQUOR. TRADE
THE SUGGESTED POW (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELTIGUAH.) AUCKLAND, July 8. Tho Hon. G. W. Russell, in an interview, said:—"Tho leaders of tho liquor trade and the executive of the New Zealand Alliance appear to have come to an agreemont on tho proposal to take a poll on the subject of national prohibition, and apparently they will agree, if they have not already agreed, to Parliament being asked during tho coming session to legislate on tho lines of tho Efiicicncy Board's recommendation, which nrovides compensation estimated at £4,500,000. Possibly the amount would ro.-juire to be taken out of the Consolidated Revenue, without any spr-cial fund being provided for interest and sinking fund. Whether those who contributed to direct taxation in land and inoomo tax will accept the proposal remains to be seon." Under national prohibition, Mr Russell added, the manufacture and sale of nkr»!iolic liquors would cease. H* opinion was that proposals should be discussed by Parliament, and a referendum taken to finally decide whether tho Bill should become law.
