STEAMER'S THRILLING FIGHT.

(Received July 6th, 1.45 am) V * LONDON, July 4 A thrilling story is related of a British steamer's fight with one of the latest type of U-boats. A torpedo passed under the steamer's stern, and a search revealed a U-boat's periscope 50 yards away. The 300 passengers on tlio steamer calmly took u P their boat stations. The submarine broke the surface a quarter of an hour later, training ttto light guns on the steamer, which replied with six shots which fell near the {übmnrine, compelling her to sheer off. She then manoeuvred to bring her two heavy guns into action, and a shell struck the cteamer, causing her to list to port. A unoke screen proved ineffective owing to the wind, The engineers £0t tho toost possible out of the engines during a running fight, j during which tho merchantman's aerials were shot away. The passengers coolly watched the fght and cheered the sailors and gunners.
Tho submarine abandoned the fisht at nightfall.
Belgian Steamer sunk
. WASHINGTON, July 3. Tn® , Department announces that the Belgian steamer Chilier was sunk by a U-boat 1400 miles from the Atlantic coast on June 21st.
