EDUCATION BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING.

Tho Canterbury Education Board met yesterday. present—Messrs C. H. Opie (chairman), John Jainicson, £, H. Andrews, C, S. Howard, 3. Maze. G. W. Armitage, Hon. J. Grimmond, M.L.C. An apology from Mr W. M. Hamilton waa received. The Appointments Committee's report, which was adopted, stated that after considering the question of the tenure of scholarships, the committee was of opinion that no public money should be expended on scholarships held at sectarian schools. Tho Department reported that as it hod been found that very many of the candidates for Junior Scholarships were quite unfitted to take the head teachers would bo required to make selection and present only thoso who had good prospects of. qualifying. Further, that in the event of junior free places being granted to applicants over 16 years of age (a proposal now under consideration), euoh candidates would be required to rely upon Jie proficiency certificate examination. The Buildings Committee, in its report (which waa adopted), stated that the committee of tho Board which visited Ashburton reported in favour of the establishment of a main, school at Allenton, and the pur-, chase of an additional two acres. The report had been adopted, and it was decided to renew the application to the Department for a main school. Mr F. Fcrriman had offered £60 towards housing tho telescope in the Aahburton school, and it was recommended that the Board should grant a similar sum under certain conditions. The Board was recommended to hold over in tho meantime the .matter of erecting two temporary class rooms at Addington; to apply to the Department for a class room to replace the temporary building at Bligh'fl road; that Dr. Chilton's suggestions regarding tho erection of a new school at West Christchuroh be held over till next meeting; that an application be made to the Department for a grant to cover tho cost of installing a eoptio tank at Hornby, and for a grant to cover the cost of two new class rooms at Opawa. The report of the Board's committee had been adopted recommending that it yould be inadvisable to shift tho Robinson's Bay school, and that unlees the Takamatua people were in favour of some now site further Tip the valloy, tho new school be built as soon as possible on the present site. Messrs Armitage and Andrews were appointed to visit Mount Somera to go into the matter of the application that the new school should be erected on a mora central site.

On tho motion of Mr Andrews it waa decided to ask tho inspectors to report as to how it was proposed to reorganise the olaesee at Addington in view of tho decision llot lo provide 'additional acoommoctation. The' .Normal School Committee's'' report dealt mainly with" the matter of the me of rooms at the Normal School lately vacated by tho Board. The alterations proposed by Mr Aschman weio approved, and the report waa adopted. The S.P.CJL wrote proposing to givo certificates in tho schools for tho best essays on kindness to animals, and asking the Board's Bupport. This it was agreed to extend to tho proposal.
