i OUTBREAK AT SOUTHERN CROSS HOTEL. Shortly after 10 o'clock last nirfit, an outbreak of fire was discovered at the Southern Cross Hotel in Moorhouse avenue, and was not extinguished before some damage had been done. The seat of the fire was in the partition between the public and private bars. In the grate in the private bar a bigj fire had been burning all day, and it Js thought that the neat frojn this caused a rats' nest, the remains of which were discovered when the lining boards were forced off, to ignite and set fire to the surrounding woodwork. The building is insured in the National office, but details were not available last night.
