INDEPENDENCE DAY.

In honour and in recognition of the Fourth"—American Independence Day —flags were flown in a number of Government and other buildings in the city yesterday. On the Government buildings the Now Zealand flag and the Stars and Stripes were displayed together. At the Crystal Palace session de luxe, after tho orchestra had, as is customary, before the programme starts, played "God Save the King,'' it played "The Star Spangled Banner." (press association telegram.) WELLINGTON, Julv 4. Sir James Allen has telegraphed as follows to Mr Winston,. American .Con-sul-General at Auckland:—"On this the fourth day of July I am sure that all New rejoice to know that the great American people are with them in the fight for freedom. From my window I see the flags of the United Kingdom and of the United Sttaes flying side by side on the cross bar at the head of the flagstaff, emblematic, as it seems to me, of the determination of these two great nations, in concert with our mutual Allies, to see that the scales of liberty, truth, and justice are evenly balanced, uot only now, but for all time."
