Dr.- C. J. Reakes, the newly-appoint-ed Director-General of agriculture, arrived from Wellington yesterday, and nenfc South by tho express. S1 Colonel Hunter, Colonel Reakes, Liaut.-Colonel Gunn, Mr H. J. Otley, ; MrT). Spoight, the Rev. J. H. Rogers, and the Rev. H. Watson were passengers by yesterday's ferry steamer from Wellington. Tho "Samoa Times" reports that Captain H. C. Cotton, Provost Marshal and Commissioner of Police at Samoa, having been appointed to other duties, has relinquished those positions. He has been succeeded in them by Captain J M. Gillespie, who was in command of the mounted infantry unit. Captain Gillespie, who saw service during the South African war. was a member of the "New Zen]and Times'' commercial staff before rejoining the Army about two and a half years ago. Liefit. Ezra A. Dobbie, of thfft Black Watch, is at present in Dunedin recuperating, an attack of malaria, contracted in Macedonia, having necessitated his return to New Zealand on si?k leave. Four years ago next month ho became a soldier, and ho went away with the Main Body, afterwards going to England, where he sat for tho examination and won his commission, Vine appointed to the Watch. He has served with the British forces i-n T>ynt. Macedonia, and France, and nlso in Ireland. He is the vonnecst of the three sons that Mr E. Dobbie (railstationmaster at Dunedin 1 ) has given to the active service of the Empire.
