Progress of the War.
Heavy local fighting on the West front and in the Italian theatre is recorded in to-day's cable messages. Tho French and Americans, following up their recent successes, have again advanced their lines and secured valuable points d'appui, inflicting heavy losses on the enemy. In the Italian theatre our Ally has made further progress on the mountain front, driving the Austrians out of strongly fortified positions despite their stubborn resistance. On the Lower Piave operations have been carried out with a view to rectifying the Italian line, thereby releasing troops for reserve, at the same time forcing back the Austrians, whose proximity to Venice constituted a danger to the city, which was within the range of gun-fire. The Italians' attack on this sector has proved eminently successful so far, and the latest messages relating to the fighting indicate that the achievement of then* objectives should bo an event of tho near future, unless some unforeseen development occurs. A report from the Ukraine telegraph bureau states that the Grand Duke Michael has been proclaimed Czar, and, with Czechoslovak and Cossack troops is marching on Moscow, but until further authenticated details are forthcoming it would ba unwis© to build any hopes on this latest sensational report.
