NEWS AND NOTES. JOTTINGS FOR FARMERS. Word lias just been, received in Invorcargtll that the purchase lias been completed by Mr W. I). Hunt, of vJic tiaiurield stud of Friesian cattle at VVaikiwi. Air Hunt has acquired a. newchampion dairy cow of the British !Lmpire at a price which is an easy record tor the Dominion. The cow in question (savs the "Southland Times") was bred by Air John Donald, of Wanganui, and completed her year's test under the Department of Agriculture's semi-official conditions of milk and butter-fat recording, on June 12th, with a production of 24,1991b of milk and 939.781b of butterfat in the 365"days. This performance easily eclipses that of the English -criesian cow Isske Hetty, whoso record or 24,0001b of milk was recorded recently. The New Zealand cow, whose name is Westmere Princess Pietertje, was giving four gallons of milk per day, testing 4.6 at the end of a most remarkable year's performance. She is due to calve on July 16th, to one of the best bred bulls in New Zealand, bred from stock imported from America. Mr Hunt has also purchased a yearling heifer out of this great cow, and tho three, including her calf, will be taken to Southland early in August. SPRINGSTON. On Saturday evening the annual meeting of subscribers to the Public Library was held, Mr J. W. Kime presiding. Tho balance-sheet showed receipts £11 14s Bd, and expenditure £7 19s Bd, leaving a credit balance of £3 15s. The election of officers resulted in the old committee being elected, with the addition of Messrs A. Thompson, C. "White, J. Mutton, G. Pilkington, and W. Mounce. Mr J. W. Kime was elected chairman, and Mr R. Wall secretary. Miss F. Rime and Sir ItWall were re-elected librarians, to whom the sums of one guinea and two guineas respectively were voted' for their services during the past year. v . TAI TAPU. An entertainment in aid of the Lady was much enjoyed by a crowded house on Friday. Tho programme was arranged .by Miss Clarke, *of Opawa. The music by tho Christchurch Salon Orchestra, tho vocal items by the Misses Coralie, Stanley, Clarke, and Partridge, and Mjr Stanley Fleming (accompanied by Mesdames Joll .and Minson and Mr Bloy), and the recitations by Miss M. Hercus were all enthusiastically received. Illustrated items were given by some young folks of j Tai Tapu. Tho programme concluded i with a pageant, "Great Britain and her Allies." Mrs 'H. Holland, in an effective speech, expressed her thanks for the assistance given. Captain | Macartney, supported by Messrs Gilmour and Forbes, moved a very hearty | vote of thanks to Miss Clarke and her [assistants for their, successful effort on I behalf of the fund.' ' '

A meeting of farmers was held on Friday alteinoon, in t"lie Kirwee Saloyards oliico, to go into the matter of amalgamating the various branchos of the .farmers' Union in the JJariicld and surrounding districts. There was a good attendance. Mr It. lleid, who was appointed chairman, stated the aims and views of tho Farmers' Union, and remarked on tho need for greater interest in the Union. Mr 1 "YV. A\. Miilholland also spoke. _ Those present decided to join the Union, and at Tend the next meeting at Dariield. TAKAMATUA. At a well-attended moeting of the ladies of Takamatua. held in the schoolroom, for the purpose of forming a | patriotic society, Miss 35. Shepherd was elected hon. Miss E. Hammond, hon. treasurer, Mrs J. Brown ' president, and Mesdames C. "Whitehead, G. Morgan, J. Cuny, S. Curry, W. Sunckell. and W. B. Hammond vicepresidents. EALING. A send-off was tendered to Privates'J. W. Witheil anil H. iUcCrea, at- tno Ealing goods shed on Friday evening. ; Captain Wallace presided. .Mr J. U. Guurness wished tne departing soldiers every succes and a safe return, and in doing so made an earnest iippeat lor the Prisoners of War Jbund. The soldiers were presented with the usual parcels by Mrs Wallace and .Miss Knox. A oon- ! cert programme was submitted, supper I served, and a dance iio.d. | OMIHI. Mrs Waugh, who for some yenrs was schoolmistress at Hazelburn, and is now occupying a similar position here, was, with Mr Waugh, entertained at a farewell gathering by residents of the Hazelburn district, and a presentation was made to each. Mr Mowatt, chairman of tho School Committee, presided. On behalf of the residents Mr Mowatt presented Mrs AVaugh with an illuminated address. Mr Steven (Totara Valley) handed a purse of sovereigns to Mr Waugh and family, in recognition of their many public services, and on behalf of the Hazelburn Relief Committee, Mr Orbelj presented a set of military brushes to Mr Waugh. All the speakers spoke in the highest terras of Mrs Waugh's work afnongst tho schoolchildren, and of Mr and Mrs Wangh's services in various patriotic movements, and also of Miss Waugh's valuable work as telephonist. Mr Waugh suitably replied, pnonist.. The Ladies' Guild entertained Mrs Waugh at afternoon tea, and presented her with a fountain pen, while from the school children she received an ebony hairbrush. TEMTJKA. At a meeting of the directors of the Temuka Caledonian Society, the secretary (Mr E. Booth) presented the bal-ance-sheet of the recent ingleside. The receipts were £7 13s and the . expenditure £5) Is 6d. leaving a debit balance of £1 8s 6d. This was considered rery

satisfactory, as all-the members, with their wives, were admitted free. A voto of thanks was passed to Messrs McLeod, Street, Bilton, Kilgour, and McCallum for supplies, and Mesdames Blacknioro and Booth for managing the supper. It was decided to hold the next ingleside in August.
