SPORTING.

RACING AND TROTTING NOTES. (Br "Looker-Ok.") (Wing to the. heavy rain that fell last week, the caretaker could not open the grass tracks on Saturday morning, as they were too sloppy, so trainers worked their charges on tho sand, but did not extend them fully. Adjutant and Brambletye, who ar© looking in fine health, were allowed to stride over teij furlongs separately, at a little better than three-quarter pace. H. Ellis had intended to gallop Jeannot, but as there was no track fit for fast work he schooled the Charlemagne II. —Janet golding over two nights of hurdles • with McMullan in the saddle, and the bay jumped well. Charley was given three-quarter pace •work, with a rattle home over the last bit, while Tip Up ran six furlongs on the bit. This gelding is coming on fast. Naupata was given a working gallop over a circuit, and Vascopia, with Don Francisco., accomplished a similar task. Varnish, who is very groggy in front, ■was sprinted half a_ mile up the back, • and ran it in fair time. Wardancer is having a spell, while Derby Day has just commenced work, and Fabisco will start again in a week or two. General Petairi lias been sent home to his owner for a few months' spell. McAuley has taken Kilrush. in hand. The Kilbroney golding is looking rough, but is in lusty condition. The Canterbury Jockey Club has received very satisfactory nominations for the three principal events to be decided at the Grand National Meeting. The Grand National Hurdle Race shows a falling-off, the number being 31, as compared with 41 last year, and the Grand National Steeplechase total is also slightly below last year's figures, 28 having been nominated, as against 31, but tho Winter Cup shows an increase, tho number being <55, as compared with 59 last year. Those engaged in the jumping events represent the best fencers now in commission, and there are also included some very promising candidates for jumping honours. The Hurdle Race field includes two previous winners in Art and Sleight of Hand, and a Great Northern Hurdles winner in Gladful. Among those in the Grand ' National Steeplechase are Master j Strowan and Waimai, who have both been successful in that event, Bon Rove, who has performed so well in hurdle races and steeplechases this season, and Nita and Coalition, who also have recent winning form to recommend them. The Winter Cup has, as usual, drawn a big list of entries, many of thorn with credentials and others that have yet to prove their quality.

(Br 'Searchlight.!') Weather permitting, a trial of an improved starting machine -will take place at Addington on Wednesday morning, when trainers are invited to be present with their horses. M. Edward's has been exercising his team, consisting of Adelaide Direct, Vice-Admiral, Antonio, Mykot, Sympathy, Miss Rye, Auckland Girl, and Sweet Memory, on the beach during J the past week. They look in first-class I condition, and ready to bo put into solid work Quincey Patch, a maiden trotter by Qumcey, in M. Edwards's stable, has built up of late, and is beginning to show improved form. There is every reason to believe that he will raco well when opportunities offer. New arrivals at Brooklyn Lodge are the trotters Galician and My Boy, and a maiden pacer, half-sister to Sympathy by Coldstream Bells. Should Galician keep sound, Edwards may yet succeed in winning more than one good race with the son of Galindo, who has a fine turn of speed HAWKE'S BAY J.C.'S WINTER MEETING.
