McLEAN institute. The monthly meeting of the Board of Governors of tie McLean Institute was held on Thursday, Mr H. Holland, Mayor of Chriitcburch, presiding. The reports of tho Finance and Institutions Committees vera adopted, and Recounts totalling £736 4s 8d were passed foi- payment. NORTH BRIGHTON BURGESSES' ASSOCIATION. The annual meeting of the North Brighton Burgesses' Association was held on Wednesday. Tho following officers were elcoted: —President, Mr Gilbert Burns; vicepresidents, Messrs J. W. Bissott, Theo. Coi, J. H. Coates, G. Henry, S. C. Thompson, A. li. Blank, and E. Barter; hon .secretary, Mr Ernest Leaver; treasurer, Mr Ralph Stringer; auditor, Mr Robert Lake. The foregoing, together with Messrs W._ CV Large, T. Leetcr, J. P. "Whatman, T. H. Strahan, and A. West, form tho executive. A deputation was received from the W aimairi and West Brighton Burgesses Association which requested tlie A* sociation to attend a meeting, in order that pressure might bo brought to bear on the prooei* authorities to secure lmprovom«nte at tho North Brighton school. The request was agreed to. A further request from the 'deputation, that the Aesociaion support them in their endeavour to induce tho Waimairi und New Brighton Councils to form and metal Beach road, was referred, to the executive for further consideration. It was resolved that the Postmaster-Gene-ral and the Hon. G. W. Russell, the member for tho district, be approached with reference to postal facilities. It was to hold a function at the earliest possible dale, in order to raieo funds for the payment of last year's postal subsidy, and the. matter was left m the hands of a committee.

The steamer suffered damage to a mast, but no on* was injured until the fight had lasted L hour, when a shell penetrated three bulkheads on the main decfa. and buried itself m a spare bunker. It did not explode, but the splinters broke the legs of a passenger. Half an hour later tho submarine retired. It remained on the surfacc. Probably it was unablo V submerge.
