DEATH OF MR J. MANDEL

(press association telegram.) WELLINGTON, March 20. _ Mr Joseph Mandel, a Wellington citizen who was well-known throughput New Zealand, died this evenipg. Ho had undergone an operation for acute appencjicitis on Monday, and gradually sank. The late Mr Mandel arrived in New Zealand in 1875 and later commenced business as a tobacconist in W elliflgton. Subsequently he took over the lease of the Club Hotel at Masterton, some years after acquiring the Empire Hotel," Wellington. Latterly he had an interest in the Grand Hotel, Wellington. the United Servicc Hotel, Christchurch, and tho Grand Hotel, Dunedin. He was also interested in the establishment of marble bars in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch. His eldest son, Dr. Leo. Mandel, is a member of tho staff of the Royal Naval Hospital in Edinburgh.
