"RED CROSS MOTOR CARNIVAL."

TO THE EDITOK Ol" "THE TRESS." Sir,—Mv attention has just been directed to a letter signed by "Keen Motorist," which appeared in your issue of Monday, the 18th inst., mainly criticising the action of the oxecutive in voting £60 to Mr H. J. ivnight, who was referred to as a member of tho committee. It is a great pity that your correspondent did not take the trouble to ascertain the correct facts of the case before rushing into print for what appears to me to be no other purpose than to cause friction and unpleasantness. Tho facts of the case are simply these : Mr Knight is a married man, and a returned disabled soldier in receipt of a small pension, quite insufficient for his support. He is therefore entirely dependent upon what he can earn at some light employment, such as clerical or secretarial work, his disablement being such that he cannot undertake work of a strenuous nature. _ Aftor giving the matter careful consideration, the committee decided to engage Sir Knight as secretary for the Carnival, in place of Mr Harman, who had previously aited in that capacity, and who left for camp early in January. Mr Knight was not appointed' to this position beforo many enquiries were'made as to his I fitness for it. Needless to mention, he has given entire satisfaction, having devoted the whole of his time and energy to the work of the Carnival, the success of the function being largely due to his untiring efforts. His work still continues, and it must be extremely painful to his feelings to have his case so unnecessarily misrepresented by your correspondent.—"lours, etc:.. . „ P; R. CLIMIE, Chairman, N.Z. Red Cross Motor Carnival Committee. Christchurch, March 19th.
