CANON SCOTT HOLLAND

(By Cable.—Pkm Association.—Ccpyright.i (United S«rvice.) (Received March 18th, 7.30 p.m.) LONDON.. March 17. Tiie death is announced of the Rev. Canon Scott Holland. The Rev. Canon Henrv Scott Hoiland was, born in Herefordshire, in 1547, and educated at Eton and at Balliol College, Oxford. He took a first-class in the Final Schools in 1870, and in the same year was elected to a senior studentship at Christ Church. He was ordained at Cuddesdon, in 1872, and ivas afterwards Theological Tutor at Christ Church. He was Select Preacher fit Oxford in ISB2. ami' again in 1893: Proctor in 1882-83, and Censor of Christ Church in 1833. In 1882 he was appointed Canon of Truro and Examining Chaplain to the Bishop, and in 1534 was made Canon, afterwards Precentor of St. Paul's. In 1910 he was appointed Canon of Christ Church, Oxford. Canon Scott Holland was ir-e of the foremost preachers of the 'lay, and his Sunda\ afternoon sermons ut St. Paul's Cathedral invariably attracted largo congregations. He published several volumes of sermons and theological works. MR HENRY FFITCH. In the death of Mr Henry Ffitch, on Sunday, another of the pioneers cf Canterbury has passed away. Mr Ffitch came out from Essex with his father and family under the auspices of the. Canterbury Association in the Sir George Pollock, arriving in Lyttelion in IS-31. For a number of years he was engaged in farming with his father in what is now Sydenham, and in the sixties he removed to Ellesn;ere, afterwards taking up the Woodstock run o;i the Waimakariri, where he remained for some years. Later he was engaged in farming in the Springfield and Oxford districts, unii as inspector of farms for the Church Property Trustees. .Since 190G iie hail boon living in Fendulton. .'lr Ffitch always took an active interest in local affairs, and also in the work of the Church of England, being churchwarden at Oxford and Fendalton for many years. He married in I.SSi SI iss Florence Dunnage, daughter of the late Mr George Dunnage, of Pa-pr-nui, and is .survived by a widow, one son, Mr R. G. C. Ffitch (of Wellington). and one daughter. Lieutenant H. H. Ffitch, his younger son, fell at Gallipoli during the historic landing. Mr Arthur Tvincr.de, a resident of Wanganui for over -j0 years, died oil Wednesday, aged 83. "The deceased, who ivas a native of County Down, Ireland, enlistod in tho 6Sth Regiment of Foot in March, 185-1, and shortly afterwards went out with his regiment to tlie> Crimea. At tho conclusion of that war tho regiment was ordered to J.ndia, whore he saw further service. Later, in 18(32, ho left there for New Zealand. The regiment was stationed at Tauranga, and under General Cameron were engaged at tho big figlit at tho Gate Pah on April 29th, 18(31, where the British troops were repulsed. However, a foiv days later the troops had a decisive victory at To Rangi, where nearly 200 natives were killed. The deceased was present at both these fights, and servo! with his regiment until March. IS6G, when he took his discharge. Ho was tho holder of the Crimean War Medal, the Turkish Medal, and the New Zealand Medal. He leaves two sons to mourn their loss.

T.n 1903 he went to Mexico as Apostolic Delegate, and Archbishop C-erretti, who wa-s the first apostolic delegate in Australia, accompanied him to tho former country sis secretary. In 1914 he was croated Cardinal, and at the same consistory the present Pope. (Benedict XV.) was also created Cardinal. Two years later Cardinal Serasina was appointed Cardinal Prefect of Propaganda at I?omo. Tt will be interesting for Catholics to know that last year he consecrated Archbishop Cattaneo' tho present papal delegate to Australia
