Mr J). Collins, of Christchurch, has received advice that his son, Mr F. W. Collins, has secured his foreign going master's certificate. Tho Hon. J. A. Hanan, Minister of Education, has advised tho chairman of the Ashburton School Committee that ho will visit Ashburton on March 25th and lay the foundation stono of the new Borough School. Captain Colin Gilray, the Wellington and Otago throo-quarter Kugby representativeplayer, has been awarded the Military Cross in recognition of his services at tho front as captain of ono of tho companies of tho British Rifle Brigade. Mr W. G. Aspinal, of Temuka, has received word that his son, Sergeant B. C. Aspinal, who is serving with the Australian Forces, has been mentioned in despatches by Sir Douglas Haig for conspicuous bravery in action. This is the second time Sergeant Aspinal ha? been mentioned in despatches. Rifleman J. S. Hawkins (killed) was the son of Mr and Mrs S. Hawkins, 152 Elisor's road, Woolston. Prior to going into camp lie was employed! by Mr Suckling, of Tai Tapu. For many years he was a member of tho Linwood Foothall Club, and also took a keen interest in all sports. Ho was educated at the Woolston School, and left -yith tho 26th Reinforcements. Tho Rev. S. Bailey has beon transferred to Wiliowby, Canterbury. During his five yoars' ministry in charge of Otautau Methodist Circuit his work has been invaluable to tho church, says tho "Western Star." As a citizen of Otautau 110 has cheerfully and ably taken his share of public responsibilities, and as a Territorial Captain-Chaplain Bailey's happy good nature always struck a rosjwinsive chord in the boys in camp. He will be succeoded by the Rev T. Coatworth.
