"ORPHANS' DAY."
A SUCCESSFUL OUTING,
members of the Canterbury I Automobile Association seldom lurn petrol to better advantage than on I "Orphans' Day," and the outing that took place on Saturday afternoon was one of the largest that the Association has yet handled. Over 300 youngsters and their attendants assembled in Cathedral square a little before two p.m.. where them was a great array of .-.between 71) and SO cars to meet. J?. I hem. Everyone was in the greatest possible good humour, and the weather was kind, and .the big procession of cars got away without mishap, accompanied by muck vocal expression of enjoyment and the waving of gaily- . coloured flags. The institutions .from SvlmOi children were taken and the numbers were as follows:—Suniner Deaf and Dumb Institute 106, Presbyterian lioys' Home 20, Presbyterian Children's Home 30, Methodist Orphanage 39. Mt. Magdala 75, RecewI mg Home 15, and the Hospital Board's ■ Orphanage 2J. Ran"iora was the destination of the gathering, the idea being to entertain the kiddies at the Show Grounds, where Mr C. van Asch and .a committee of ladies had the r.r- ---: rangements in hand. Messrs WhitI conu>e and Tombs very kindly providsd '- ~ a big lot of books as prizes, and Mr R. E. McDaugall supplied enough sweets and biscuits to give each young- ' eter a bulging bagful.
