COUNTY COUNCILS.
IvOWAI. At ilic monthly meeting of the lvowai County Council there were present—Messrs G A. McLean (chairman), J. Rowe, J. lJWyilie, VV. N. Hale, and T. Retallick. The 'Mayo,- of Christchurch wrote inviting Teprobontu-tivea of the Council to attend a. conference for tlie formation of a league for the lulvanceinent of Canterbury. Ill© chaiiman was appointed to represent tho Council. The Auckland City Council wrote asking for support, of a resolution Eeeking tho retention of Samoa after the war. Tho letter was received. . The Department of Internal Affairs _ wrote informing tho Council of Jiltera.tions i in the motor regulations. The new regulations require numbers ou both front and rear of motor-cars and motor-cycles, the back numbers on cars to be illuminated at night. Mr R. Peach, Ashley, wrote stating that the bridge over the drain at his main entrance waa broken by a threshing machine, and asking the Council to give the matter immediate attention. .It was decidcd to repair the bridge, Mr Peach to pay half cost. Mr G. W. Forbes, M.P., enclosed a letter received from the Minister of Public Works, stating fchat tlie delay in the erection of the North Rowai bridge was due to the difficulty of obtaining hardwood timber from Australia. The Leithfield outfall drain agreement was approved, and the clerk ivaa instructed to ask those int-crested to sign it. It was resolved that ratepayers be given on.? month to remove willows from Dock Creek. Amberley. II was decided to increase workmen's wages as follows: —Foreman 12s 6d per day, second teamster lis 6d, casual hands 103. It was resolved to support the resolution of the Automobile Association asking the Railway Department to give greater protection at. the Styx crossing. I'arnham Bros, wrote consenting to the
necessary land being taken from tlio Education Reservo fronting Parnham's road, Sefton, to widen that road. The adjoining tenant, Mr C. Quid;, naked £'30 compensation for loss of plantation. The Ituid being needed for road widening, it was agreed to allow Mr Quick the. amount asked. The matter bf the increase of gorso on roads was dis-cussed, and it was decided to serve occupiers with notices to clear their roadside frontages. The secretary of the Canterbury Patriotic Fiukl asked that the balance owing by the County (£425) be paid by March 31st. It was decided to pay the amount at once. The clork wua "instructed to sue for outstanding rates. The credit balance in the bank was reported to be £1C25.
